Eco-Friendly Travel: Five Reasons to Cut Down on Car Use

Lauren Romano
All of the cars on the road are not only causing extra traffic, but it is also causing harm to the environment. The exhaust contributes to air pollution and may even contribute to health problems of individuals. There are quite a few benefits to taking other modes of transportation when you are going to work or running errands.

Parking and walking are free

If you ride your bike to work, you do not have to pay to tie your bike up. Even if you ride it to the train station, they have bike racks that you can lock it up to free of charge. If you live near your destination, walking back and forth may be a good, inexpensive option as well.

Other modes of transportation are better for the environment

Riding a bike or walking does not release the harmful exhaust caused by cars. Even if you take a train, it can be less harmful to the environment than if you drive your car. No one wants to live in a polluted area, so the fewer cars that are on the road, the less likely an area is going to be filled with toxic air for everyone to breathe.

The initial cost and maintenance is much less for a bike

You have to pay for car inspection, gas, repairs and that does not even include the initial cost of the car. Bikes can cost quite a bit of money and may require a repair here or there, but it is nowhere near the cost of a car. It also takes much less material to put a bike together than a car, which can be better for the environment overall.

Other modes of transportation cause less traffic

If you ride a bike or walk, chances are you are not contributing to a huge traffic jam. The longer a car is stuck in traffic, the longer it has for the exhaust to pollute the air. In addition, if you are stuck in a traffic jam, you are most likely stressed and aggravated, which is not even good for the body. Walking and bike riding can be relaxing. Even taking a train can be more relaxing as it can give you time to get things done or sleep.

It can be better for your overall health

When you walk or ride your bike, you are getting in exercise while you are going where you need to go anyway. Even if you take a train, you are walking or riding your bike to the train station. When you take your car to work or on errands, your walk to and from the car is the extent of the exercise. In addition, you will not have to be stuck behind a car spewing harmful exhaust and breathing all that in.

Taking other modes of transportation can have many benefits for the environment as well as for your personal life. Cutting down on your car use can be a simple way for you to help make the earth a bit cleaner and can even help you keep some more money in your pocket. Before you get in your car, consider taking another mode of transportation instead.

People used to walk everywhere. Now, they drive two blocks to the Wawa! However, in some neighborhoods, you really don't want to be on foot or on a bike!
