Econo Lodge is part of the budget hotel chain for Choice Hotels. This location has budget written all over it. When I stay in a hotel of this nature all I want is a clean bed, comfortable room and basic amenities. In that, this location delivered but fell a little short of the mark in other areas.
Reserving the room was a breeze. I always click through the iGive portal because a tiny portion benefits the nonprofit of my choice. Next, I got to Choice Hotels.com and input the usual data to select which brand, location and room type. In less than 5 minutes the room was reserved and I was on my way.
The Econo Lodge in Wytheville, Virginia also participates in the Choice Privileges reward program. Points are earned for every stay. When enough are accumulated they can be put toward a one night stay or other incentive. Details are on the website
Amenities at the Econo Lodge in Wytheville, VA include wireless internet, a continental breakfast, iron and board, hairdryer and cable television. They also have a microwave and refrigerator in the room. It is two stories, you enter from the outside of the room and there are no elevators.
What I liked Econo Lodge in Wytheville
The hotel sits off of the interstate on the side road. Signs are well placed. We didn't have a problem finding it. The clerk who checked us in was very nice and the check in was smooth. It is a pet friendly hotel but there is an extra fee.
Inside the room was adequate. We had a large television and there was enough room to get around the beds, desk and standard hotel furniture.
Signal strength of the WI-FI was not steady. It bounced around between 2-4 bars of signal most of the time. Fortunately it was enough to keep me online. I was never bumped off even though the connection would become low.
Having a refrigerator in the room was helpful. We were able to keep our sodas and lunchmeat cold with no problem.
What I didn't like at the Econo Lodge in Wytheville
The room appeared to be clean but really could have used some touch-ups in the bathroom. Maintenance was sloppy. There was a small brown panel in the wall next to the door. It was as tall as the bathtub and about 10 inches across. This really stuck out.
Cookies and coffee were available in the lobby beginning in the afternoon. This was a nice touch but a little off of the mark. There were 2 types of store brand cookies in the original plastic wrap. These were sitting on top of a resealable plastic container. The Econo Lodge in Wytheville definitely lost points for presentation on that one.
Breakfast is from 6:00 am '" 9:00 pm. in the room next to the lobby. That was interesting. What sounded good quickly lost appeal. The room had enough space for about 3 tables and chairs. Room temperature was an issue. It was hot enough in the breakfast room that I was concerned the food quality was affected. For example, the packages of microwavable sausage biscuits were sitting on top of (but not in) a bowl of ice. Orange juice is great for breakfast.
At around 8:00 am both of these felt to me as though they were at or about room temperature. The blueberry muffins we were told about were miniature but there was toast and jelly. At least the coffee seemed to be at the right temperature. We decided to skip breakfast and pick up real sausage biscuits and cold orange juice on the road.
Final recommendation of the Econo Lodge in Wytheville
Would I stay there again? Probably not.

Post a CommentI'm working on it Tom. LOL
Well done here!
Whenever we traveled, we always found Econo Lodges to be OK for the money, but nothing special. Good review!
This sounds like a place we stayed at on our way to Ohio. I wonder if it's the same. From your description of everything, it sounds very much like it. The 'breakfast' was a big fat joke.
Well done as always Gayle, thank you!
I've never stayed at a Econo Lodge. The best part of Wytheville is their beautiful water tower!
Thats great for those who take their dogs with them on vacation.
