Economic Collapse Causing Extinction? Not Likely

There are many theories on what would happen if the global economy collapsed. Some go as extreme as to say that humankind could become extinct. It is very unrealistic to believe something this extreme would occur, but life as we know it would definitely enter a whole new scenario. Something as small as monetary policy shouldn't ever cause the extinction of a species such as mankind. Before money, barter and trade was the way of doing business. Life went on without money, as it would if money became nonexistant.

Humans are very resilient when it comes to survival. We have always been able to think our way out of our problems, and turn to a solution that allows us life. We have never found ourselves in the eyes of defeat, except by other humans. There are typically two types of problem solving, problems that find a better way and problems that's answer is only survival and how to. We certainly failed at answering a better way at times. The questions that arise on how do we survive have always been answered, with the exception of a few societies long before technology gave way to the knowledge that we have today.

Economic policy have always, since its creation, seen it's ups and downs. Even in the United States, we have survived much worse conditions than we face today. Those who think we would not survive such a catastrophic event in today's day and age are simply overlooking human nature. We have survival instincts, even so that we have resorted to cannibalism when faced with the most extreme adversities. Even in the event of a mass loss of life, human instinct is to survive and reproduce. Genetics as strong as they are today would create, in essence, an even more capable mankind through reproduction. Survival of the fittest would become a major part of human reproduction, and even the certain attributes we look for in mates would shift in both males and females.

Human adaptation is very powerful, and has been since our beginnings. We aren't the most advanced species for no reason. Laying all instincts aside, human extinction could possibly come as a result of a global collapse. But power in numbers and adaptation would certainly disagree. Money is a very powerful object, but the brain is so much more able than many will ever understand. Human survival isn't overpowered by the need for money, money is simply the driving force for survival in today's society. Give another problem when money isn't the answer, and the brain will find the solution.

No Jack, I'm not talking about war at all. If you look at the things Peter Swift and other people Glenn Beck has had on his show many times, these people believe that the govt. spending is going to cause massive and overwhelming inflation that not only ruins our country as well as the world's economy...causing a mass disruption in the flow of all resources, causing millions even billions to starve.

Another theory is that a Solar Flare is coming in 2011 that will destroy all of our power boxes and lines causing a mass loss of energy possibly worldwide. Many believe this would cause mass death possibly even extinction. Just a couple of popular theories on the world's collapse.

I'm not quite sure what theories you are refering to that indicate economic collapse would cause extinction.
It seems to me that if this were to be true, it would be because it would ignite conflicts that resulted in the full scale exchange of weapons of mass destruction.
In this instance, the entire planet would be rendered uninhabitable by either nuclear winter or the spread of a bioengineered superpathogen.
If this were the case, I'm not entirely sure why "survival of the fittest" and "the brain" would save us.

Well written. But minimizing the effects of our economic collapse won't stop the suffering of hundreds of millions of people. I applaud President Bush for his bail out packages. At least he is trying to revive the economy. The "let the economy collapse" philosophy is totally unacceptable and self destructive.

    So true.
