Economical Gift Ideas: Children's Toys

A Look at Affordable Toys for the Holiday Season

Leslie Reese, Nutritional Educator
Most of us have a budget that we try to adhere to during the holiday season. Money is tight for many right now, and with the holiday season approaching we need to look at economical gift ideas. Children will be the focus as they are the joy of our holiday season. For reference and as an avid shopper of the site, I used Amazon to look at the best selling toys thus far and gather some economical gift ideas for the children of various ages. You cannot beat the free super saving shipping either because not only are we short on money, but time as well.

Fortunately, many of the economical gifts can also be educational, so that could be considered a bonus. Let's look at some of the educational gifts for various aged children. For the babies, ages birth to 24 months we will look at three products. The first one is Baby Einstein Takealong Tunes which can be purchased new for only $9.99. Features are large buttons that toggle through seven classical melodies which helps to promote auditory development and music appreciation. The second one is Soothe and Glow Seahorse which can be purchased new for only $14.99. When hugged his belly glows and he plays 5 minutes of music and ocean sounds. Things sure have changed since the GloWorm. The third one is Hasbro Playskool Step Start Walk 'n Ride which can be purchased new for only $16.96. Toy is a two-in-one used to help babies learn to stand and walk and also can be used as a ride on. The Melissa & Doug Slice and Bake Cookie Set is recommended for ages 2 to 4 and can be purchased new for only $12.75. Made to help enhance a child's imagination, the 12 wooden, sliceable cookies are perfect for creative play. The Live Butterfly Garden is recommended for ages 4 and up and can be purchased new for only $14.31. Educational and fun for children, allows them to see butterfly metamorphosis up close.

Another great way to take advantage of an economical gift is to let it be geared toward the entire family and not just the children. Children love to play games with the family and that is an awesome opportunity to spend time together. Quiddler is first on this list and is geared toward ages 8 and up and can be purchased new for only $9.60. This is a short word game with the challenge of arranging your entire hand of cards into words. ThinkFun Zingo is another and is appropriate for children ages 4 to 8 and can be purchased new for only $14.67. This game helps to teach image and vocabulary recognition, matching, memory, concentration, and social interaction.

In conclusion, it is not impossible to purchase economical gifts for children this holiday season. Educational and those that can be fun for the entire family can still be obtained on a budget. It's a win-win for all involved.
