Economical Tips to Save on Hotel Costs

Linda M. McCloud

Do you wish to go on a trip? Do the high hotel costs frighten you? Do you wish to go and visit some family members? However, you long to stay in a hotel while you visit and you fear you just can't afford that luxury? Well, here are some economical tips you could consider the next time you think you can't afford a hotel.

Ask If You Can Get A Better Deal

Don't be afraid to see if you can get a better deal. You never know until you ask and you may be surprised once you ask. The best way to ask is by skipping the reservation line. Call the hotel front desk directly and ask about their lowest rates. Don't be afraid to negotiate. If the hotel manager or front desk person offers to rent you a room for $125, ask what is available at $100 a night. Remember they want your business. For this reason, he won't hang up on you.

Consider Hostels

Hostels aren't the bad places they used to be in the past. Many of these places accept reservations and offer both private rooms, as well as baths. They even have rooms for couples and families. Plus, rates can be really low. If you are going to be visiting in a city, chances are there may be hostel or two around that city. Call that city's chamber of commerce to find out before booking your place to stay.

Consider Sharing Costs With Another Couple Or Family

If you are vacationing with another couple or family, you have more options when it comes to where you will be staying. For instance, it may be cheaper to rent an actual cabin or during your stay and splitting the cost, then it would be to rent the number of hotel rooms needed if you were sharing costs with another couple or family. Plus, you would have more rental options and possibly a full working kitchen. This could cut down on the amount you needed to spend at restaurants while you were vacationing.

Couch Surf

Yes, there is an actual site called couchsurfing.com. This site will help you link up to people who are offering couches or spare rooms to guests who are out of the town. Again, this may give you a better option than sleeping in a hotel.

If you don't like the idea of staying with strangers, you may like the site, airbnb.com. It offers private rentals such as small apartments and even historic castles to out of town guests.

The main thing to remember is that you do have options when it comes to hotel costs. Some of these options are actual economical tips that can save you on hotel costs.

We enjoy staying in the cabins at the KOA. If none are available then we typically choose a Motel 6, Super 8 or a Budget Inn. They are less expensive then other comparable hotels and motels, and they are normally clean and cozy.

We have always been campers and it stemmed from trying to afford to stay in a hotel with the three girls. We bought a camper instead and thru the years, it was a great investment for us. cheers ;)
