Economy will Force People to Vacation at Home

Stephanie Craig
Food prices are rising. Health care costs are going up. Gas prices are soaring. But somehow paychecks are staying the same. Costs have got to be cut from somewhere in the budget.

For most Americans, the vacation will be what is cut from the budget. It will be too expensive to travel anywhere, much less afford the expensive attraction tickets and food from tourist areas. In order to save money, you do not have to cut out your vacation. You will just need to learn how to vacation differently. You can vacation at home.

Instead of traveling far away and staying in a hotel, go to attractions in your town or in a town close to you and stay at home. Pretend that you are a tourist visiting your local area. Get on the Internet and check out your local Chamber of Commerce's website. Try to find local gardens, museums, or parks you may have never visited. Pack a picnic or have lunch at a small, local diner. Bring your camera and act like a tourist. You can even pick up a cheesy souvenir for memories.

Another money saving vacation idea is to have each family member pick a local activity that day for everyone to enjoy. You may end up going to a ballgame on one day, painting your own ceramics another day, working at a soup kitchen the following day, picking strawberries the day after that, and going to the pool for the last day of your vacation. You can support people and businesses in your own community and save money by not traveling far. But more importantly, families can learn about each other's interests and talents and have fun doing it.

Single people do not have to miss out on saving money and vacationing at home. Make a list of what you have always wanted to do but have never done. Pick one goal from the list each day and accomplish it. If your goal cannot be done in one day (such as getting in shape to run a 5K), make a how-to-complete plan for your goal and start the steps that day to reach your goal. Just don't forget to schedule a little time for rest, since you are on vacation.

If you have not saved enough money on your vacation by staying at home, try to use the Internet to make money from your vacation. Write an article for a website like Associated Content about your hometown and its attractions and include pictures. Maybe others will visit your town for their own vacation.

With smaller budgets and higher gas prices, you can still enjoy a vacation. Vacationing at home may be a different vacation than you are used to. But with the right attitude and a little planning, it can be more fun than traveling far from home.

Good advice. Way to take a rotten situation (bad economy) and put a positive spin on it.
