The process of making drywall currently is horrible for our environment. What makes matters worse is that drywall is currently needed and used in billions of homes throughout the world. The process to creating the drywall has not changed much since its invention in 1917. Factories roast ground-up gypsum rock at large temperatures. This process creates about 20 billion pounds of greenhouse gases a year! So Serious Materials EcoRock congeals without the use of heat, used several recycled materials, and (believe it or not) holds up even better than traditional drywall that we are using today.
So Serious Material had to test nearly 5,000 different chemical combinations before they came up with the EcoRock. The EcoRock is made up of a combination of 20 materials. Some of the materials included are fly ash, slag, and kiln dust. These materials make up about 85 percent of industrial by-products and react chemically when mixed with water. The combination allows them to bind together into a paste that is poured onto sheets. Believe it or not, the oven-free process uses only twenty percent of the energy that is put out to typically make regular drywall.
The most amazing thing about the EcoRock is how much stronger it is than traditional drywall. EcoRock is impervious to termites and mold. This basically means that you would not have to replace the material as often as you have to replace current drywall material. Another good thing about the EcoRock is that is is very affordable. The creators were able to price it at the same price as high-end drywall. What this means for the near future is that more and more consumers will probably choose EcoRock over traditional drywall.
So Serious Material has really out done themselves with the creation of EcoRock. They have enhanced a procedure that will allow greenhouse gases to truly be cut back. Many companies are trying to become green friendly and will soon look into obtaining this type of material. Look for it to arrive in your home in the near future.

Post a CommentThere is nothing "Green" or "Eco-friendly" about Ecorock
Ecorock is made from a cocktail of highly hazardous chemicals and industrial byproducts.
Sodium hydroxide - a highly corrosive and toxic chemical.
Cement kiln dust - a corrosive and toxic byproduct that is loaded with chromium and nickel.
Coal fly ash - a hazardous byproduct of coal burning that contains a cocktail of very toxic metals.
Blast furnace slag - a corrosive byproduct of the steel industry.
The sodium hydroxide and CKD are used to activate the fly ash and slag - a so-called "geopolymer".
Surace stated that "there is no fly ash in Ecorock". That is a lie.
Ecorock is toxic, it is not "Green" and it uses highly hazardous, energy-intensive and polluting ingredients.
We have been looking at Serious Material's patent applications - they really are a puzzle because they do not match the "Green" and "Eco-friendly" claims made by the company.
The patents basically describe the reaction of phosphoric acid or acidic phosphates with magnesium oxide, coal fly ash, calcium silicate. If this is the core technology of Ecorock, then it is anything but Green - for example:
1) Phosphoric acid and phosphates of any description are not Green by any stretch of the imagination - they are manufactured by a energy intensive and highly polluting industrial process which causes environmental damage, generate large amounts of toxic byproducts - including hydrofluoric acid which is released into the atmosphere and is extremely hazardous and radioactive phosphogypsum waste which is stockpiled in vast amounts. Where is the Green?
