Eddie Van Halen to Enter Rehab

Legendary rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen said on Thursday that he would be entering rehab. The move appears to have ruled out a reunion by his band when it is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next week.

The announcement comes just one month after he and former Van Halen singer David Lee Roth said they would tour North America together in the summer. David Lee Roth is a long time antagonist of Eddie Van Halen and speculation arose that the tour would never happen.

David Lee Roth last performed live with Van Halen in 1984. He was replaced a year later by Sammy Hagar. The band replaced its original bassist, Michael Anthony, last year with Eddie Van Halen's teenage son Wolfgang.

The Dutch-born Van Halen, 52, has long battled alcoholism and also survived a bout with tongue cancer. He said in a letter to his fans that by entering rehab he wants to "work on myself" and wanted to do right by his fans.

"I have always and will always feel a responsibility to give you my best. At the moment I do not feel that I can give you my best. That's why I have decided to enter a rehabilitation facility to work on myself, so that in the future I can deliver the 110 percent that I feel I owe you and want to give you."

He also said, "Some of the issues surrounding the 2007 Van Halen tour are within my ability to change and some are not. As far as my rehab is concerned, it is within my ability to change and change for the better."

The open letter was released by his spokeswoman and girlfriend Janie Liszewski. Liszewski did not respond to requests for more information.

Van Halen released their self-titled debut album in 1978. The band became one of the most influential rock bands of the 1980s and sold about 75 million albums worldwide.

This latest stint in rehab for Eddie Van Halen isn't the first time. He admitted in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone magazine that he had already entered rehab twice up to that point. He admitted a drunken driving arrest that came after he had just left an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Van Halen was appalled by all the sob stories and stopped by a bar for a few shots.

Van Halen has not released an album in nine years.

I hope he makes it to the induction ceremony; it's quite an honor, and Van Halen is in great company. The band was never really the same since Roth left, but I'm glad to hear they're going on tour soon. (I wouldn't be surprised if the impending tour set him off; thankfully he made the decision to go into rehab.) I wish Eddie luck, and can't wait to see them on the road!
