Eddie Vedder Hits the Musical Mark with 'Ukulele Songs'

Stripping Away the Big Band Reveals a Brilliant Work of Art

Michael P. O`Shaughnessy
May 31, 2011 saw the release of the long-awaited second full-length solo record from Pearl Jam front man, Eddie Vedder. The release entitled "Ukulele Songs" is the culmination of over ten years of his writing with the little stringed instrument that he purchased on a beer run in Hawaii some 15 years ago.

I had been eagerly awaiting this album for months now. Having heard some of Vedder's recent work like "Rise" from the 2007 album "Into The Wild", I was envisioning a masterful work of ukulele playing and soul-baring vocals. I was not disappointed. This album is outstanding.

Eddie Vedder's "Ukulele Songs" is both brilliantly crafted and raw in its simplicity. With haunting tracks like "Without You", and driving tunes like "Can't Keep", Vedder has created a world of poetry with this album that is completely unrivaled. Wether you are a Pearl Jam fan or not, this album is a completely unique and important work that deserves your attention. It is a must for every audiophile.

Pick up a copy (I always buy the CD for the highest quality sound) and spend 35 minutes basking in the warmth of a journey through love, grief and lighthearted whimsy with Eddie Vedder, his ukulele and a few guest appearances. "Ukulele Songs" just might make your list of favorite albums of all time.

I just listened to a few of his songs. The music is different than what I am used to, but it was peaceful and carefree. It is definitely interesting.

I have three ukes... a concert, tenor and baritone. Don't play them especially well but love to play with and on them.... especially when vacationing on Maui!
