Though quite simple, and at points predictable, I enjoyed the story. I hear a lot of people calling this a revenge flick, and nothing more. Partially true. At its core, that's exactly what it is, but there's more to it than that. The conspiracy surrounding Craven's (Mel Gibson) daughter I thought was a lot of fun. Again, it's simple, but fun. It's even believable. As for the actual revenge stuff: it's very cool, and entertaining.
Most certainly part of the reason I enjoyed the story as much as I did is because it's written by one of my favorite screenwriters: William Monahan. However, I was unaware he wrote this until the credits rolled. Which, at least to myself, proves I like his work independently of knowing that he wrote something as I'm watching it.
The acting isn't what Oscar nods are made of, but still completely solid. It's a rarity when I not appreciate Mel's work. Ray Winstone was great as usual. I liked seeing him. He's becoming more prolific, and I'm glad for that as I'm enjoying everything he's done lately.
So, at the end of the day, I got a kick out of this one. It didn't cause me to contemplate any profound questions or anything like that...it left me satisfactorily entertained. That's all this is really: an entertaining flick with a nice twist here and there, and one of the better endings I've seen in a while.
