A Gem Near the City of Denver

I lived in Denver, Colorado, for almost ten years and I never knew where Edgewater was at. I had heard of the city and I assumed it was by Parker, Colorado, which is about thirty to forty-five minutes away from Denver depending on the traffic. While I worked at a non-profit agency, I met someone from Edgewater, but that was my only experience with this tiny city within Denver.

Edgewater is on the west side of Denver. If you cross over Sheridan Boulevard from 30th Street to Colfax, you are in Edgewater. When my husband and I moved back to Colorado we ended up in Edgewater. We live four blocks away from Sloan's Lake, which is a trendy, hot spot to buy real estate. I cross Sheridan Boulevard every day to walk my dogs in the Highlands area of Denver, which is one of the places to live if you want to be in a hip neighborhood.

The location of Edgewater is fantastic. I am surprised that more people have not tried to live in the town that is so close to EVERYTHING. In ten minutes, you can be downtown to see a Rockies game, go to the theater, dine at some of the tastiest restaurants or shop in the stores on the 16th Street Mall. We are walking distance from the Broncos' football stadium. If you want to go to the Denver Zoo or any of the museums, it is ten minutes away.

Living in Edgewater, you can be in the BIG city without having to deal with all the big city prices, crime or taxes. Edgewater has its own police department. They patrol the city that consists of 5,000 residents throughout the day. After living here for a year, I don't recall hearing about any crimes committed in the city of Edgewater. I live right next to a lady that serves on the city council, so I'm sure we would be informed of any crime.

After living in Denver, I was expecting cars to be broken into during the holidays. While we lived in Denver, my car was broken into right before Valentine's Day. My radio was stolen and the passenger window was shattered. Before Christmas, my husband's car was stolen and found about five miles away. We assumed some kids just needed to go on a joy ride. When my husband's car was stolen my car was broken into again. Everything in the glove compartment was thrown onto the floor. We assumed that the person or persons were looking for the pink slip to the car or the face to the new radio I had installed.

The holidays came and went. I did not hear about any cars being broken into in the City of Edgewater. But I did see shattered glass on the side of the streets where cars were broken into as I walked the dogs through the Highlands. It's so safe in Edgewater that during the summer we keep the doors open and just lock the screen doors. We have three Rottweilers and one physically looks like the breed. This would deter anyone that knows us and our dogs from breaking into our house, but a stranger would not know. We did not have any problems all summer.

Edgewater has a few restaurants just blocks away. This is the best part of where we live. My husband and I will walk down to the Edgewater Inn, order some pizza and beer, and have a great time. We can have a number of beers then just walk home. There is no need for a cab and we don't have to break any laws by driving home under the influence. There are other places to eat in Edgewater: a Thai Restaurant, Sloan's Bar & Grille, China Café, La Cascada Mexican Restaurant, Three Sisters Pizza and Mussels, Jersey Mike's Subs, and many fast food eateries. Plus, Starbucks is a few blocks away on Sheridan Boulevard. There is a grocery store (King Soopers), Target and the post office is three blocks away from where I live.

If you're looking for a place to live or just passing through Denver, check out Edgewater, Colorado, and see what a nice place this little town is.

I mean a neighborhood with only 5,000 people (10,000 if you count edgewood just south of 20th ave) should not have any murders hardly ever. This small neighborhood has had 6 murders in the last 8 years and 3 other deaths where police shot the suspect. Thats a total of 9 murders in the area less than a mile radius in the past few years. Thats on par with the neighborhoods in North Denver, West Denver, and Southwest Denver. Again, this isn't the worst but the normal people are leaving. Also, a population of the white people here are older people who have lived here since the 60's and 70's still are here. But even they are moving out. Also, have you not seen the gang graffiti around 20th ave, 26th ave, 22nd ave??? I mean its not the worst area, but its getting crappy like neighborhoods in Denver. The last 8 years, citydata.com rates its crime level (USA average=321) as 734, 588, 480, 500, 461, 440, 452, 530. Im just saying...

Also, edgewater schools are rated among the worst in Denver Metro. The average ACT score at jefferson high is 12. Other things that have happened since I lived here is a man shot his wife on 20th and otis, and the man she was cheating with. He was another known gang member. The police shot a man who robbed the liquor store by 20th and lamar also.

Well I respect your opinion but I do disagree. If you look at citydata.com, Edgewater has a rate of crime higher than national averages, especially for a neighborhood its size. I have lived here since 2000 and I have seen it change. True, the northern part near 25th ave and benton street is much more trendy due to the new yuppies who have moved into west highland, sloan lake, berkeley, in the past 5-10 years. But edgewater is still now predominately Latino (bestplaces.net revelas it is 51% Latino in 2009, it was 35% Latino in 2000). Also, have you not heard of recent incidents in the area. On 17th and sheridan edgewater/denver/lakewood police shot a gang member who robbed a liquor store by the king soopers. A bum killed that drug dealer off 25th and harlan last december. There was that hostage situation, which resulted in a shoot out with police off 22nd and marshall last september. Edgewater PD revealed that the man was a gang member with prison gang connections. Also, edgewater schoo
