Using edible varieties of plants cam spice up your landscaping and feed your family at the same time. This article will discuss some ideas you can use to plant edible plants into your yard.

Edible landscaping is the use of edible garden plants to landscape your yard. This can be achieved in a variety of ways and is easier than you think. Why waste water on a lawn that produces nothing but grass?

The following are some easy ideas to plant some edibles into your landscaping.

Vegetables

Vegetables are ideal because you can feed your family with them. Peppers, cabbage, greens,beans and peas are great for filling in any bare spots in your landscaping. These plants can be planted attractively as well as proving functional. Your family and friends might think you are off your rocker but just wait until harvest time and they will be trying to copy you next year! This is also a fun activity for the family to do together. If you are single you could probably feed yourself for the majority of the year using edible landscaping.

Fruit

Berries, grapes and fruit trees are a wonderful addition to any landscape. More thorny varieties can also be used to deter small animals to getting to veggies and other goodies you may plant in your edible garden. A good rule of thumb is to plant 3 berry bushes for per person in the household.

Flowers

Flowers are the most common and cheapest way to landscape your yard. But did you know many varieties are edible or can be used as medicine? Roses, nasturtiums, calendula, violets, lilacs and many more are useful not only as food but in various other ways. Not only are flowers attractive but they can tie your edible garden together. Why not try some sunflowers?

Herbs

Herbs are some of the easiest plants to grow. Not only will your yard look great your cooking will be complimented with fresh herbs. You will also be able to dry them for in the winter. May herbs are perennials and will return the following year.

Growing food not lawns is a wonderful way to get your neighbors, friends and family interested in gardening. Planting an edible garden is also a very eco friendly way to grow your garden. Not only will you save water but you will also save on trips to the grocery store or market making it convenient.
