Edna and Emma

Sukrit Walia
Setting: This scene takes place in the swamps of New Orleans where Emma and Edna are reincarnated as frogs.

Narrator: As night engulfs the sky one chilly day, two frogs encounter one another. Both seem to be burdened by their troubles and little did the other know; they were both similar in appearance and personality.

Emma: Bonjour, what brings you out tonight?

Edna: Tonight, I seek to release my stress through swimming aimlessly throughout the swamp, and yourself?

Emma: I am unable to rest. Being turned into a frog has simply been the worse experience I have ever come upon. Do you still resent those whom turned you into this degrading creature?

Edna: I resent only that I may never see my one true love Robert again.

Emma: Robert... Tell me about him.

Edna: He's simply divine and full of excitement! It is a shame he did not have the confidence or the courage to openly acknowledge our love.

Emma: I have dreamt of a love so grand. What I seek is beyond any measures men could bring.

Edna: Tell me Emma, have you ever found love or were you in search simply for lust?

Emma: Of course, I was not in search for lust, I have exquisite taste and I often appealed to gentlemen simply because of that.

Edna: What made you decide to give up your life?

Emma: Many things led up to my tragic end. It was the buildup of my debt, my unhappiness, and similarly to you the rejection of my one true love Rudolph, that made me resort to such drastic measures.

Edna: Oh dear, well I feel as though my life was not as fulfilling either. I married Léonce only to live a banal life. Much to my surprise, it was beyond confining.

Emma: Just as you married Léonce for a standard way of life, I married Charles for love. Needless to say we did not get what we bargained for in our marriages.

Edna: Yes, I agree and therefore we commit affairs to find what we think we want; never really taking in what we have. I have neglected my children and I do not believe I could give them anymore if I were a human now.

Emma: I have done the same, motherhood have never intrigued me. So Edna, astound me and tell me why you have gave up yourself to the sea.

Edna: I too sought love from the one who could not expose his love for me, I had agreed to leave all that I knew for him, but he could not do the same for me. (breaks into tears)

Emma: Edna, no man is worth your tears. In the end, we seek that "happily ever after" ending but it is truly a rare occurrence in real life.
