Holiday Gifts that Parents and Children Will Love

Barb Hacker
When choosing Christmas presents, keep in mind that seven to nine year old boys are still excited about learning and are especially interested in science. Most boys of this age are finally adept at toys and games that require greater fine motor skills. Many seven, eight and nine year old boys are avid readers, especially when the reading material supports their other interests. Here are some Christmas gift ideas that will support a child's interests and provide learning opportunities at the same time.

Christmas Gift Idea: Science or Magic Kits

Boys are interested in learning how things work. There is no better way to explore this than through science. There are many great science kits available at stores like Target. On-line, check out Steve Spangler Science for some interesting kits. Or, put together your own kit with the ingredients needed to do some of the experiments on the Spangler website. Many of the experiments need nothing more than common household items.

Magic kits are also a big hit with this age group. Learning tricks to impress their family and friends gives boys a sense of accomplishment. It is also a fun way to get them to practice reading and following directions.

Christmas Gift Idea: LEGOS and Other Building Kits

LEGOS are an open-ended toy that provide for hours of creative play. Use the age guidelines on the box to get a LEGO kit that will be a challenge, but will not be too difficult. The kits are an excellent way to practice fine motor skills, following directions and to learn new LEGO building techniques. Once the kit is completed, many boys choose to take it apart and use the pieces for their own special creations. With the many different LEGO kit themes, it is easy to chose a kit that would make a great holiday gift for the boys you know.

Christmas Gift Idea: Board Games

Seven, eight and nine year olds are finally old enough to play many of the classic board games that have been around for years. This is the year to introduce Monopoly, Scrabble, Life and other classic games. New board games, such as Cranium Cadoo are a fun addition to family game night.

Christmas Gift Idea: Books

Reading levels can vary widely for seven, eight and nine year old boys, so be sure to check with the child's parent before purchasing any books. No matter the reading level, most boys enjoy books that fit in with their current interests. A soccer player would like a book about soccer and a super hero fan would enjoy super hero books. Books like Ripley's Believe It Or Not are interesting to most boys in this age range. Books make great Christmas presents and also work well as stocking stuffers.
