Educational Requirements for Kindergarten Teachers

Karen LoBello
Kindergarten teachers foster the development of language, vocabulary, and social skills in children. They use storytelling, games, rhymes, building materials, and interactive play to involve children in the learning process. Patience and enthusiasm are prerequisites for this career. Certain stipulations need to be met in order to teach kindergarten.

Observe

A kindergarten class is one of a kind. Observe a few different kindergarten teachers in action before you decide to enter into that grade level. Since class size reduction is often not in effect until first grade, kindergarten classes can reach a count of 30 or more students. If you saw a kindergarten teacher like my college roommate, Marilyn Duncan, in action, you'd understand how an effective kindergarten teacher operates. She has published a book titled The Kindergarten Book: A Guide to Literacy Instruction that's a great read for prospective or current early childhood, kindergarten, or primary instructors.

Obtain a Degree

The minimum educational requirement for a kindergarten teacher in public schools is a 4-year bachelor's degree in primary, elementary, or early childhood education. Early child development programs are offered in associate, bachelor, master and doctorate programs. I earned my master's degree in elementary education, K-8. I could have taught kindergarten with that degree. However, I chose to get a minor in early childhood education in order to delve deeper into this field of study.

Develop a Portfolio

Part of the course structure for primary teachers generally involves creating an idea file and a professional portfolio. The portfolio will showcase your experiences and accomplishments. Be sure to take plenty of photos. Keep all positive notes and accolades that you receive. Document your experiences. These items can all be included in your portfolio.

Student Teach

You will be required to student teach, generally during your final semester of college. This will be done under the supervision of a college adviser and an experienced classroom teacher. Since I majored in elementary education and minored in early childhood education, my student-teaching was split between the two. You will learn to develop effective lesson plans and manage the kindergarten classroom.

Pass an Assessment

In most states, all teachers are required to pass competency tests such as the Praxis. You will need to study and prepare for the exam. Generally, some of your college classes will address the exam.

Get Licensed

Teachers need to be licensed. They also must be fingerprinted and must yield to medical tests such as a tuberculosis test. Every state is different. In some states, kindergarten is not compulsory, so teachers may fall under different stipulations. Contact your state's Department of Education and your school district to verify the requirements for a kindergarten teacher in your state.

Thanks for the link to my book, Karen. I do believe that our youngest kids deserve the highest quality teachers. So many people think that Kindergarten teachers just "watch them play" where indeed the skillfulness of watching the learning occurring (because little ones are so transparent) and providing the right kind of feedback makes it a very challenging job.

Thanks for promoting the case for high quality kindergarten teachers!

You always share a lot of information with an economy of words. Appendix E of your friend's book is interesting: the essential words list.
