Educational Success Online

The Benefits of Taking Classes Online

Amy Capps
Online college classes are becoming more mainstream and acceptable in our society. With tight schedules and busy lives, students are looking to the internet for help. If you are one of the many education seekers interested in studying online keep in mind that most online class providers hold standards and guidelines as any college does. They require many hours of study time, deadlines, research, and most importantly self discipline.

While you will not be sitting in a physical classroom, many online college websites provide curriculum similar to what you would expect from a classroom. Homework is to be submitted via attachment; however will contain the same information as the hard copy would. Classroom discussions are common which involve both the students and professor. There are also tests, quizzes, and assessments which are timed and graded as would be in the classroom.

So if you are thinking of taking online courses because they seem to have less work load than traditional in class courses, think again. A successful online student should set aside about eight to ten hours a week per course. Students who are able to self-motivate tend to strive in online courses. Many enjoy attending class in their pajamas, but being too relaxed and casual during class and study time can be a downfall. In a classroom setting the professor keeps students on track and informed, but online the only form of communication between professors and students may be email. It is up to the student to stay on top of assignments and prepare for tests; this is why self-discipline is a key component to successfully completing online classes.

Students are responsible for creating their own class schedule. Rather than meeting at a set time every week, online classes are usually accessible twenty four hours a day seven days a week. It is up to the student to decide when to study and complete assignments. Professors will only provide students with deadlines and test dates. This has proven to be a major downfall for online students that lack self-discipline. Students should not put off assignments or studying and set personal time lines and goals for each course.

Communication between student and professor is essential while taking online courses. Early on, students should contact their professors via email and ask for any information needed that the syllabus does not cover. Students should know how to access all of the areas of the website and what is expected of them. Students should also ask the professor for alternate contact information, such as a phone number or external email address, just in case the website encounters problems.

The internet can prove to be a great venue for furthering education for some; for others who lack self-discipline a classroom setting may be the best option. To be successful students who study online must learn to be self-motivated most importantly self-disciplined.
