Educational Things for Educators During Holiday Breaks and Summer Vacation

Don't Stop Learning Even If You Have Your PHD!!!

Emily Griffin
There is always something that educators can do to become more educated in their field as well as many others. I personally have had some teachers and professors basically say that everything the need to know they learned in college. Wrong! Even if you have a PHD in something doesn't mean you know everything and that you need to stop learning. You need to keep learning long after you finish college. This is a mistake that many people make when they finish school. This is why life becomes so mundane sometimes.

One thing that you can do is to go to your local museum(s). For example, here in Sarasota, Florida, there is the Ringling museum of art and not even half a mile down the road that is a Historical Car museum. Also, in Tampa there is a holocaust museum with fascinating pieces from the concentration camps. There is even a box car that was used to transport the Jews. Another thing at the Holocaust museum that fascinated me was the fact that they had an actual sign that they had at one of the concentration camps. On the sign, in German, it said, "Work is Freedom." But on the sign, the Germans intentionally had one of the letters on it backwards to basically tell the Jews (for any that noticed) that they basically were never going to be free again.

It's also very easy for people to audit classes at your local college. Whether it is a music class, art class, acting class, writing class or even a math or science class, there is always going to be a class that you will find interesting and you don't have to worry about what your grade is!

Another thing you can do to help keep yourself educated is to read books. Books (and of course the Internet) is an incredible source of information. Plus if you will want to share these things with friends, colleges or students, it is very easy. As strange as it sounds, I have tried to even read the dictionary from cover to cover a few times. I have yet to succeed though.

I could honestly write for hours and hours about how you can keep educating yourself and stay a well rounded person. You can take a karate class, dance class, a foreign language class, quilting, building computers, pottery, poetry, cars, anything. There are countless things you can do during your breaks to better your base education.
