Edward Scissorhands Remake: Can Anyone Replace Johnny Depp?

Joyce Carole
The film Edward Scissorhands debuted in 1990 and like many Tim Burton films viewers tended either to fall in love with the mystical story of a gentle loner with hedge clippers for hands, or to not like the film at all. Rumors are running wild today of remaking Tim Burton's classic and replacing Johnny Depp with the currently very popular star of the Twilight Saga, Robert Pattinson. Could Pattinson go from Edward Cullen to Edward Scissorhands? I have to say, I certainly hope not and here is why.

Robert Pattinson Has Much in Common with Johnny Depp

On the surface, the two stars have much in common. Both actors have a fan base overflowing with teen admirers. With their lanky body types, dark tousled hair and exotic good looks, the stars share subtle resemblance. Both cause females (mostly teens) to swoon, while many others question exactly what the appeal is.

The Similarities End with the Physical

Johnny Depp like Robert Pattinson began his career as a teenage heartthrob. Depp's first role was in the teen cult classic horror film, Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984 that was followed by a small role in Oliver Stone's Platoon. Depp then made the move to television starring in Fox's 21 Jump Street, a role that made him a teen heartthrob. Depp then starred in a series of critically acclaimed roles beginning with Edward Scissorhands.

Pattinson's heartthrob status can be attributed to his role as Edward Cullen in the box office smash Twilight Saga. Unlike Depp, who has been praised for his acting as well as his good looks, Pattinson's acting talents have left critics as cold as Edward Cullen's icy vampire body. Robert Pattinson has yet to show the ability to move outside his role as the Twilight Saga's star vampire. His performances in films outside the Twilight Saga like the recent film, Remember Me have failed to garner either critical acclaim or box office success.

Are the Rumors of an Edward Scissorhands Remake True?

Fans of the iconic film Edward Scissor hands can breathe a sigh of relief, as Hollywood executives have recently released a statement denying that there is any truth to the rumors that Pattinson will replace Depp as the gentle soul with hedge clipper hands in a movie remake.

Could Edward Scissorhands be Played by Anyone Other than Johnny Depp?

The remake rumors have generated many to ask this searing question. Is Depp the only actor out there who could possibly play the role of the shy recluse? In my opinion, there is no need for a remake of the 1990 Tim Burton film. Edward Scissorhands was unquestionably a unique film. A remake of Edward Scissorhands would lack the original film's uniqueness. It is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that another actor could bring something special to the role of Edward Scissorhands, but to even try to do so would take away from the original point of the movie. If there was ever a movie that should not be remade it is this unique cult classic.

Man, can't Hollywood come up with anythign original anymore? I for one would never go to see an Edward Scissorhands remake. But I liked reading this article about it :-)

I don't know why they would remake this movie. I saw Remember Me and I didn't think it was very good. Nice write up Joyce.

I agree that whether or not he could be replaced, and I do not think he could, what is the need to do so. Some things just need to be left alone.

Please, please, stop with the lousy remakes!

Very true. Hard to imagine anyone replacing Depp. You made a great point about Pattinson not having nearly the acting chops and career scope beyond Twilight. I also think you're absolutely right about not needing to remake Scissorhands. I would only expect a terrible bomb in comparison with the original. Great job!
