For the ulcerative colitis sufferer, exercise prevents muscle atrophy or rejuvenates muscles; exercise keeps the body moving which in turn keeps it functioning as it should; exercise helps a person feel good emotionally more easily facing the illness and, it reduces stress which minimizes various flares.
What the person who has an ulcerative condition does not want to effect is a lot of stress for the body by trying to "bulk up", or placing a lot of high-protein and mineral foods and drinks on their stomachs, which among other things can raise blood pressure. Of course, there are people who can do it, however, on stand; exercise for ulcerative colitis is for tone, stress relief and body function.
I do target my arms, legs and abdomen with specific exercise programs. In this article I am sharing what I do for my arms.
When I was a kid I was always a little skinny and as I've relied more and more on exercise for my ulcerative colitis condition, I've dreamed of developing big "guns" designed to strike fear into the heart of the biggest man. Since I have ulcerative colitis (also I'm old) my doctor would have none of my dream. I am allowed to use weights; two-and-a-half-pounds per arm...real impressive.
Once again, the objective is to exercise my arms and create tone without placing too much stress on my body. The idea is not to "bulk up" but to keep from "wasting down".
The exercises I use are really very simple and they definitely work.
I basically work on the biceps, triceps and lungs.
The biceps are strengthened by simply holding the weights by my side and then "folding" the arm. Typically I do "sets" of ten, and, I do three sets. Remember this is a two-and-a-half-pound weight.
For my triceps, it is more of a "hold"; starting with my arm bent in front of me and putting the arm with weight behind me. As I said, then, I hold this as long as I can.
For my lungs and peripherally my chest, I walk at a clipped pace holding a weight in each arm. I have had to work at this activity and I have to admit that I am up and down with this exercise.
For me, arms are the hardest parts of the body for me to exercise, mainly because I have always felt they were not my greatest asset.
For a person with an ulcerative colitis condition, here are some simple exercises that keep the arms active. They aren't fancy but they are effective.
