Effective Recycling at Home

Kenneth Crawford
We all know that recycling is beneficial to our environment and ourselves. What most people don't know is how to start recycling effectively at home. It really is quite easy once you develop a plan for recycling. By putting a plan together you can cut your waste in half and create a better environment. Gandhi once said "You must be the change you wish to see in the world"

You first need to call or visit your local landfill or trash station. Find out what types of products they are recycling. Some cities don't accept certain things and sometimes you have issues with what items can be mixed together and what cannot. It isn't as confusing as you may think. Once you have this information, ask the collecting station if they have bins for home use. Many will give you plastics bins to turn in your recyclables every week. In the event they do not offer this, simply set up and mark plastic bags to store your recycled products.

Once you know what is to be recycled and you have a way to store and separate your items, make a designated place in the home or garage as your recycling center. Be sure all family members place their recyclable products in the proper container. Whenever possible rinse out bottles and cans as this will keep down odors and insects both at home and at the collecting station.

If your municipality offers pickup service be sure to place your containers out for them. If you must take the recyclable to a station, do it when you have to go out anyway. Most of the time if you have a recycling station that requires you bring it, you also have to take your regular household trash there too. Plan your trip to do everything at once and use less gas in the car.

Something else you can do to help in recycling is to cut back on the disposable you get everyday. Start with putting a sign on your mailbox that says "No Junk Mail". That small step will save you a trash can load of paper in a month. Reuse things that you can whenever possible. That empty milk jug could be used as a watering container for your plants. You get the idea, be creative.

Recycling has been around for some time now. Sadly only about 30% of the population make a concentrated effort to recycle. Imagine if we could double that percentage how much space we would save in our landfills and how much less we would need to tap into natural resources. Effective recycling at home can be achieved and can be as normal as breathing once implemented.
