Effects of Smoking on Your Skin

S. Ann
Many people make New Year's resolutions to quit smoking, but by the summertime, they are smoking again. For some, quitting is easy, but for others it is a daily struggle. There are many reasons why quitting is easy for some but not for others. Many people have a psychological addiction to smoking which can make it difficult to quit. The idea of lighting up and sitting outside or at the kitchen table after a stressful day at work is a release. Other people are addicted to smoking physically, which means their body thinks it needs the nicotine to keep functioning properly.

Years of smoking can affect a person in many ways. The most noticeable are on the skin. Age spots, wrinkles around the mouth, discolored teeth, and skin that is tighter than it should be are all signs of years of smoking. Once a person's skin begins to show these signs, it is difficult to reverse the effects. People begin to rely on chemical peels and other methods to remove the signs and help the skin return to its original beauty. While these tactics may work for a while, they are not a permanent cure. Damage to the skin has already been done.

People who quit smoking at an early age have a better chance at stopping the damage done to the skin. By drinking plenty of water and eating properly, a person may be able to improve their skin's appearance by returning many of the nutrients that were being depleted. Not only does smoking dehydrate the skin causing it to age, smoking can also keep the skin from receiving essentials vitamins needed to keep the skin looking healthy. This is how a person begins to age years before they are ready.

Ending one's smoking habit is the only way to begin to salvage one's skin. If there are minimal signs of aging present, a person may be able to improve their skin by treating it better and also by seeking medical attention to improve what is already damaged. If a person chooses not to quit smoking, they will look years older than they really are and will end up with skin that is rough and dry. Moisturizer will not help the situation. Being good to one's skin means taking care of it on the inside and on the outside. Quitting is the only way to help damage skin begin to repair itself.
