Defining and aligning corporate strategies requires much insight and research. Companies should figure out strategically where they will want to go in the next five to 10 years. This requires market research and lots of planning. Once the company has a clear understanding of where they want to go it often makes sense to put these in writing. It is hard to remember the destination if you don't have a map. These written forms are the strategic goals and mission statement.
To further create efficiency it often makes sense to take these strategic goals and mission statement and ensure that the organizations are designed toward fulfilling these objectives. Each standard operating procedure and departmental structure should be designed to make sure that the organization maximizes its opportunity to achieve these goals. The more they are aligned the least waste the organization will incur.
It is one thing to define the strategic goals, mission statement, and the standard operating procedures but it is completely another thing to make sure that employees base their daily decisions on actions that will further the interest of these objectives. In order for this to happen, employees will need to be knowledgeable of what the company is aiming for. This requires training, awareness, rewards and punishments. The company will need to make a strong effort to print the material, test employees on their knowledge of the material, and discuss the material on a regular basis. Employees will need this knowledge engrained if you expect them to use it.
Making everyone in the organizations knowledgeable of the corporate objectives gives employees an opportunity to weigh and balance the needs of many competing demands. Only through this knowledge can we hope to have a mass amount of people making proper decisions on a daily basis. The more decisions in line with corporate objectives the more efficient the organization becomes. Yet this can only come from employees who have some knowledge of the standard so they may adjust their efforts.
