Life will always presents us with opportunities to develop ourselves or improve ourselves. Some things we are already very good at and others we aren't good at, at all. For example, we may have a lot of patience but very little self-discipline. It's all about sharpening our characters. Other areas that one can develop and improve in are the areas of willpower, concentration, habits, tolerance, etc.. The list goes on. I think the biggest thing us humans lack in the area self-improvement is the will to work for it.
Anything worth getting in life is going to require some kind of time and effort. These types of things do not happen overnight. Nowadays there are a lot of quick fix guides and instant success programs that promise you immediate results. The authors of these types of programs understand that the generation of today wants results immediately. If we could stick our weaknesses in a microwave, and let them heat up for a few minutes to make them stronger, we would. But that is not going to happen. It's important to understand this, so that when improvement does not happen immediately we don't get discouraged and give up on ourselves.
I am not saying that self-improvement guides and programs don't work. What I am saying is that it takes time to develop skills and it takes time to improve weaknesses. You can buy a book on self-improvement and start practicing their techniques, but for them to work you need to practice those techniques day after they. You have to practice just like an athlete. Repetition is how we become master's of things. Sadly, people consider it too much work and refused to take the time to improve themselves.
The important thing to remember is, anything you do to develop positive habits will sharpening you, and will help you to be able to handle circumstances and situations more successfully. Anything you try to improve on will present you with obstacles. If one doesn't have enough willpower or strength to overcome these obstacles they won't do anything about it and will not get any better. At some point we've likely heard someone say that quitters never win. And unless were talking about quitting something like a bad relationship, a bad habit, or a dead end job, quitters always loose. So never let obstacles cause you to quit on yourself. If there's a wall in your way, beat that wall with a hammer until you break through it. The more you beat against it(overcome), the weaker it gets, and before you know it it's no longer there(conquered). So overcome and conquer.
