As a child, one of my favorite Easter activities was Egg Butting. After we had hunted and found all of the Easter eggs, each of us would pick out an egg to play the game with. Two eggs are chosen by two people who then go head-to-head (or butt-to-butt) in this Easter competition.
Now, you can't pick just any egg. You have to pick the strongest egg of the bunch. Look for an egg that has no cracks. There are two parts of the egg you should be concerned with. The "head" is the narrow end of the egg. The "butt" is the wider end.
The eggs are held firmly in one hand with only the end exposed. The two players first smack the heads of their eggs. Next, the butt ends are smacked together. The egg that cracks is the loser and the loser must then peel their egg.
The winning egg then goes on to challenge the rest of the eggs. The Egg Butting game continues until all the Easter eggs are peeled and ready to be chopped up for egg salad. A few eggs tend to get eaten right away, as well.
There are some Egg Butting techniques you can employ to increase your success. Make a sharp jab when you smack the opposing egg. I'm not sure why this works, but it sure helped me to beat my sister's butt on many an Easter morning.
Another technique is to hold the egg gently so that you do not accidentally crack it when the other person smacks their egg onto yours. Make sure you don't squeeze your egg!
This game is not only good to get kids to help peel Easter eggs for a meal. It is also a great way to occupy excited children who have consumed too many Peeps. The adults might even be able to sneak in a little nap. I'm pretty sure that's why my father taught us the fine art of Egg Butting. While we were smacking each other's butts, his butt was on the couch.

Post a Commentegg butting cracks me up. ;-) This was a fun read.
I have never heard of this. I love the way you wrote this one.
I taught it to my 2 year old last Easter. She loved it! My Dad is from Baltimore, but his mother is from Pennsylvania. I always figured it was a Baltimore thing. :-)
I see you're from Michigan, where a lot of Eastern Europeans emigrated. Most likely, this is where your family learned this. You are the first person on AC who's ever heard of this game. Your goal was different, but the game was the same. Do you still do this?
lol this is cute, never heard of this game
