Egyptian Love Poem

Tyson Burke
Before our first encounter,

My heart was like a river stone:

Buried and battered,

Crushed beneath the weight

Of a hundred others.

Each night I fell asleep,

Increasingly morose

With each passing day.

My incessant turmoil

Pummeled my soul,

Like a master does his slave.

But then my eyes met yours,

For the very first time,

And my heart began to pound

As surely as the Nile floods.

My arid soul became fertile soil.

My mind was clouded,

Cluttered with visions

Of you-of us.

My appetite dwindled,

My concentration reduced

To a narrow corridor

With you as the light at the end.

But I knew, my dear

That our paths could not cross.

Regardless of my deepest desires,

I could not love you- Sister of the Pharaoh.
