A speech aired on Tuesday night, and the president said that he never planned on running for another term, and that this was regardless of the current protests that are happening in Egypt. Mubarak said that there are necessary steps that have to be followed in order for a peaceful transfer of power to occur.
The announcement comes the same day as hundreds of thousands of protesters made their way to the downtown streets. The streets were flooded with men and women waving flags, chanting slogans and showing their frustration and anger over the political situation in Egypt. The hundreds of thousands of people responded to a call for a million people to show up to protest Mubarak,a nd force him to leave office.
Even though the president said that he would step down from being president, he said he will not leave Egypt. He says that Egypt is his country and that is where he lives, and that he defended the land and interests, and he will die in Egypt.
