EHEIM Professional Wet/Dry Canister Filter Review

When setting up a new aquarium, the filter is the most important component of the system. Different types of filters serve different purposes under gravel and hang on the back filters are good for smaller tanks, while canister filters are good for larger tanks. If the fish tank is over 70 gallons in size, a canister filter is recommended. The Eheim Professional Wet/Dry Canister Filter is a great filter for the price for aquariums ranging in size from 70 gallons to 129 gallons.

The filter of an aquarium is in charge of removing all the harmful chemicals from a fish tank to ensure the safety of the fish. Think about this, when a fish uses the bathroom, the waste just stays inside. All the chemicals the fish was just trying to rid his body of are now floating all around him. That is pretty disgusting. This is where the filter comes into play as it will make the water cleaner which will in turn make your fish happier.

The different types of filters include hang on the back, under gravel, and canister. The hang on the back filter is the most common type of filter. It is sold as part of complete aquarium kits that are sold at the super stores. The hang on the back filter does a pretty good job of cleaning the water in a small confined space. The water intake is right next to the clean water output. Under gravel filters can cover a greater area, however the amount of carbon that the water passes over is limited. Carbon is the active component in cleaning the water. The canister filter contains a large surface area of carbon, as well as a great distance between dirty water in take and clean water output.

In the realm of canister filters, the Eheim Professional Wet/Dry Canister Flter provides the most bang for the buck. Costing just under $250, the Eheim is affordable for anyone starting a fairly large aquarium. The quality of the parts is great, and everything needed to get up and running is included in the box.

The Eheim Canister filter is a breeze to set up. The unit is placed underneath the fish tank, and the inlet and output tubes are ran to opposite sides of the tank. With a couple presses of the primer button the system is up and moving water at a fast pace. The filter also contains shut off valves for easy maintenance. With the valves in place, the water will not spill out all over the place when the canister itself is removed from the system in order to clean or change the carbon.

The Eheim Canister Professional Wet/Dry Canister Filter is a must for anyone with a decent sized fish tank. If you have oscars, cichlids, mollies, gold fish, or even a cat fish, the better the filter will result in better fish. In its price range this filter is tops. It is a snap to install and can run for a long time without any scheduled maintenance.
