Here then, is a list of gifts you can give that won't break your budget, and let the receivers know that we are concerned about their happiness and welfare. The best part is that you don't have to wait until the Christmas season to give these gifts! They are valuable all year long.
1. The gift of affection. Give this gift generously to your family and friends, and especially to your children. Let the important people in your life know how much you care. Hugs and kisses, a pat on the shoulder, a squeeze of the hand. Let these small actions demonstrate your love for family and friends.
2. The gift of a compliment. A simple and sincere compliment can make someone's day. You don't need to gush over your coworker's new dress or your children's artwork, but let them know you notice how nice they look or how talented they are.
3. The gift of service. When we are down in the dumps, helping someone less fortunate can make us realize how blessed we truly are. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, help your church group with a toy drive, or offer to do the shopping for an elderly neighbor whose physical abilities are limited.
4. The gift of a written note. You don't have to write a full sonnet; a short note just to say "I love you" can be a cherished memory. Tuck a note into your husband's lunch box or your child's school bag. Send a short letter to a relative or friend you haven't seen for a while to let them know you are thinking of them.
5. The gift of solitude. When your spouse seems especially stressed out from work or holiday preparations, a little down time may help them get recharged. Take the kids out for an hour or so to enjoy the Christmas lights or window shop, so your spouse can have some peace and quiet. Offer to take the kids of a single parent friend for an afternoon so the parent can have time to finish their own holiday preparations.
6. The gift of undivided attention. This can be a meaningful gift to your children, who often get lost in the daily rush of living. Spend an evening baking cookies or making candy, or play some board games.
7. The gift of listening. Truly listen to what the person has to say without interrupting or daydreaming, or thinking about what your response will be.
8. The gift of a favor. Every day, go out of your way to do something nice for somebody in your life without being asked. Kindness given will be returned to you someday.
