El Mirador, located at 722 S. St. Mary's St, stands out in a city with more Mexican restaurants on a block than my hometown contains in total. Sure, finding Mexican in San Antonio is easy. Which makes naming the best Mexican in the city nearly impossible.

One thing is for sure, though. Any list of the ten best in the city would be a joke if it didn't rank El Mirador in that number.

Traditional Mexican dishes as well as Tex-Mex offer many intriguing choices, with prices ranging from $18 to $7.

On a recent visit, the Lomo de Puerco, "Coriander-comino crusted pork loin,?grilled and glazed with tamarindo? ancho sauce," was a succulent delight. The sauce has just the right sweet-savory tang to compliment the tender pork loin to perfection. The accompanying chipotle potatoes were delicious and the vegetables cooked just right.

The Enchiladas del Mar, were mild and creamy, the flavors of the shrimp highlighted beautifully by the avocado-tomatillo sauce.

On the Tex-Mex side the Beef Fajitas were perfectly spiced had a smoky tenderness so deliciously suited to the warm flour tortillas that accompanied.

The El Mirador Special was a feast. Not for the petite appetite, it includes: "One cheese enchilada, one green ?enchilada, beef empanada, served? with Mexican frijoles refritos and a? crispy taco." It's a good way to get a sampling of several specialties, though. All of the items were outstanding.

The atmosphere at El Mirador stands out for its understated good taste. Mexican Restaurants are sometimes plagued by invasive growths of plastic flora, big screen televisions, and truly regrettable forays into mural painting. El Mirador, thankfully, avoids these eyesores. Collections of authentic Mexican Talivera pottery decorate the walls, along with decent folk trompe l'oeil paintings, and reproductions of works by Fernando Botero and Diego Rivera.

Many of the wait staff have worked there for years and are extremely professional and capable. They're friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and tend to take very good care of their customers.

In short, El Mirador stands out in every way in a city full of Mexican Restaurants. It is a must-try and sure to become a favorite.

Also available are banquet facilities and the Puro Social club, a private cigar room.
