El Monterey Chimichangas: Much Better Than Frozen Burritos

g christine
I recently tried the El Monterey Chicken and Monterey Jack Cheese Chimichanga. I have to say these are really good, way better than your average frozen burrito.

They are filled with cheese, chicken pieces, and a nice spicy sauce with onions, green chiles, beans, jalepeno and tomato. This chimichanga was especially good, because normally I don't like anything spicy, but it wasn't too spicy, just really flavorful with a touch of spiciness.

The crust is thick and flaky, even when I microwaved it. There's also tons of cheese inside, mozzarella as well as the Monterey jack. I would have preferred more beans, however. It seems like I only noticed a couple.

I bought the large 18 pack bag at Costco, where I do a lot of my bulk shopping. The chimichangas come individually wrapped, which is great, since any type of burritos tend to stick together in the larger packages if they aren't wrapped, which can be annoying when you just want a quick meal, and you have to spend fifteen minutes trying to pry your frozen burritos apart.

This was the first time I tried this type of chimichanga. Usually I tend to avoid chimichangas or burritos with chicken, preferring beef instead. But this was the only kind available at the moment, and my teenage son had asked me nicely, so I caved in. When my son cooked one for himself, I thought it smelled really good, so I had to try one for myself. I really liked it, and my other two smaller children love them as well. Everyone in the entire house liking the same thing is a rare occurrence in my home, so I think these will be on our regular shopping list from now on.

The El Monterey Chimichanga with Chicken and Monterey Jack Cheese aren't for those on any type of weight-loss diet. While they might taste really good, I can eat two of them at one sitting. At 300 calories per chimichanga, with 11 grams of fat each, this is not exactly diet food. Sodium is pretty high as well, at 540 mg, and the cholesterol is 25 mg per serving. And for those looking to watch thier carb intake, well they can forget it. There are a total of 38 grams of carbohydrates, with only 2 grams of fiber.

It's not all bad, however. There are some nutritional pluses, including 12 grams of protein, probably from all that cheese. There are also decent amounts of vitamins a and c, as well as calcium and iron.

All in all, I would have to say that yes, El Monterey Chicken and Monterey Jack Cheese Chimichangas are definately good, and I will definitely buy them again in the future. My whole family tried them and liked them. Although they are more fattening than I would normally prefer in a snack, they are still worth getting again, as the overall virtues of flavor, flakey crust, and a decent amount of nutrition outweigh any imperfections.
