Learning how to use a computer, a task that seems to be tremendously easy to you and me, is in fact quite difficulty for some of our elderly members of society. People imagine that computers are as they were 20 years ago, when only technicians can properly operate them. These types of thoughts are the thoughts that cause the elderly to stay away from computers.
Some other type of older folk tends to stay away from computers because they are scared of how they function and what they do. Many are informed on a daily basis about the dangers of ID fraud and other numerous malicious things that computers can cause. Some elderly people give technology a try, but they are turned off the first time they see the famed "you have committed an illegal operation" error. Perhaps if computers were more user-friendly then more elderly people would join the ranks of the internet.
Great efforts need to be made in order to successful market computer systems to elderly people. Many large companies have strayed away from this market segment that has traditionally avoided technology. They do so only because the market segment is very hard to penetrate.
If elderly people could successfully use a computer then the quality of life of many of them would substantially increase. Many elderly people are confined to retirement homes, where they do not have that much to do. The internet would provide them with a virtual world in which to exist. They could communicate with other people, perform in a number of activities, and learn about the world and all sorts of things that they previously would not have been able to do in even the best of retirement homes.
Some may distract themselves by playing games with other people. Others may look for unique information about their personal hobbies. But the most important aspect of this is that the internet would be enriched with the knowledge of generations gone by. People on the internet may begin to see aspects that they have previously never seen before.
It is a common fact that over time this trend will "correct" itself as younger generations move to fill in the position of "elderly", but what about this generation. What needs to be done in order help the elderly people get online?
