Election Day 2008: A First-Person Account as a Clerk

Election Day
Neighborhood: South
Terre Haute, IN 47807
United States of America
Walking in, I looked around the large room. People were beginning to set the polls up and getting other things ready for the day. After writing my name on a sticky "Welcome" paper and putting it on my chest, I was led to my table for the day and sat down. Turning around in her seat, my partner introduced herself. Sitting next to her was a large bag of peanut M&M's and a large drink.

Glancing around, I noticed people bringing trays in by the load. Being new to this whole election day clerk business, I was confused. My partner explained how local restaurants and businesses donate food to each voting site for the day. People will be bringing food in throughout the day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Plus individuals will be bringing snacks in. This is not a good time for those of us who are dieting.

Feeling excited about the day, I settled in and waited for the first voter to walk my way. Within the next couple of hours, the place was jammed packed with voters who wanted their voice to be heard. Overhearing discussions, I found out that there was a long line stretching out around the building and more people were coming. I knew that day was going to be a hectic day.

During the few times it was relatively slow, I had time to join in on discussions. I soon learned about a situation that arose at one of the other voting sites. Apparently, a group of people were stationing themselves in front of the doors and questioning potential voters about who they were going to vote for. Depending on who they said, the troublemakers would stop the voters from going in by threatening them. It was soon broken up and the troublemakers were hauled into jail. It just goes to show how far some people will go to have their voices heard.

Being a clerk for election day was an interesting and fun experience. I hope to be able to participate in the next one. Facing the future, I pray that the new president will be a good one and that he will lead us into a successful future.
