The New York House seat race has already had a load of surprise twists and turns. Only in American politics can you see such bizarre actions.
The New York House seat race is happening before the 2010 midterm elections because Representative Jon McHugh went on to become Secretary of the Army. The race was between Democrat Bill Owens and Republican Dierdre Scozzafava. Many said that Owens was too conservative, while Scozzafava was too liberal. Add Conservative independent Doug Hoffman in the race and the plot thickens.
The Election Day November 2009 race for the New York House seat is something of an anomaly. Many prominent Republicans including former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin backed the Conservative Hoffman instead of their own Scozzafava.
The story gets better. Scozzafava, realizing that she didn't have a chance of winning backed down, although her name will still be on the ballot. It would seem that Scozzafava would have backed the Conservative Doug Hoffman, but she didn't. She backed the Democratic Party's candidate, Bill Owens.
The outcome of today's election will serve as a powerful reminder to politicians that they need to listen to their constituents. In 2010, the mid-term elections could prove brutal for many Democrats, especially if they don't listen to the protests being made by the individuals in their states.
In addition to the New York House seat race, the race to become Governor in Virginia and New Jersey are highly anticipated races. Republicans and Democrats alike are staying glued to poll results to see which direction American people tend to sway.
I think all politicians know that many Americans are tired of all the lies, broken promises, and deaf ears. It's up to each party to win back the trust of Americans, because face it - both parties are hard to trust.
Finding out which way voters tend to sway will have influence on topics such as healthcare, the economy, and various other programs making their way through Capitol Hill. The races come at an opportune time where the citizens can make it known that they are the ones that put the representatives in their respective jobs, and they are the ones that can ultimately pull the plug on a politician's career.
