Not all tears have been happy though. There are thousands of Americans that are not feeling the brotherly love, and unity. As predicted, proposition 8 turned out to be, by far the biggest controversy of the 2008 Presidential elections. The passage of this bill has overnight, left thousands of gay couples, married earlier this year in California, in a state of limbo. On May 15, 2008, when the Supreme Court of California overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage, many out of state, same sex couples came and got married in California. California did not require the marriage to be valid in the home state the couple lived in. The passage of proposition 8 has been devastating to the gay community.
Now their tears are born of frustration, and pain. Are they still legally married, or are they not? How can you end a marriage, without a death? Without a divorce? It is unheard of. Answers to these questions seem to be very slow in forthcoming.
Celebrities are coming to the support of the gay community in force though, indeed many famous people were among the gay couples married in California. Melissa Etheridge has posted her reaction to the passing of Proposition 8. Other ultra rich celebrities may join her, in taking a stand against uncle Sam, and refusing to pay IRS taxes, in protest of the passage of Proposition 8. They feel that their rights have definitely been infringed upon, and that they are being treated like less than citizens.
In a time of unity, it is a shame there is yet another major division arising, with the passing of propsition 8. There is no doubt, this matter will not go away quietly, nor quickly.

Great article. Each morning lately I try to imagine what it would feel like had California voted to write anti-miscegenation into the constitution. I try to feel very personally what it must be like to have your friends and neighbors say you are less than a full citizen and are not entitled to basic property rights under a civil marriage contract and to heck with the constitution. That it was a very slim majority should make the initiative reversible on constitutional grounds - but I don't know what comfort that gives. There should be no such thing as less than equal. We simply cannot impose our religious views in unconstitutionally tyrannical ways. And there is something very unseemly to me as a Christian in thinking I have a right to dominion over God's children. Love one another as He has loved us...
