Elective Classes--Pathway to the Future

Maricia D. C. Johns
There are a variety of elective classes offered in all school districts. These classes are of a W-I-D-E variety, offering anything from photography to animal production. Classes from modern dance to musical composition are offered. Students should be encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities allotted to them by sampling some of these classes. These classes will assist the students in deciding if they are interested in certain careers, and it will certainly let them know if they dislike certain areas.

There is the simple sewing class that leads to fashion designing. There is the woodshop class, that now leads to furniture designing/making, and we all know what handmade anything goes for.

The electives of today offer not just computer programing/science; they offer web design, information technology that can lead to certifications that will assist students in finding employment. In almost every department at the local high school there are classes that take the students to a new level.

In band, there is the usual marching and symphonic band, but there is also jazz band, orchestra, private lessons and composing. There may be a recording studio where they teach the students the ends and outs of recording. The fine arts have everything from acting, to writing, to building the sets. They have classes in directing, producing, and even designing and producing the handbills to pass out to the patrons of the productions. There is modern dance, tap, ballet, folk and even choreography classes to select from.

In some districts there are hospitality classes that teach hotel/restaurants careers. Some districts even have student run restaurants where the students learn it all from the wait staff to the maƮtre. The culinary arts program teaches them how to become world class chefs.

Classes are offered that teach the students to become hair stylists, makeup artists and even physical therapists. You name it and there are probably classes that are offered for it. All schools do not offer everything, but most offer something. It is always good to spark a child's interest. An interest may just become a career.

Sadly, here in California, most elective classes have been eliminated as 1) resources have dwindled, and 2) increased emphasis is placed upon teaching to standardized tests (the nefarious California STAR tests.) I agree with you, of course, both as a former (and long time) student and as a professional who works with children. It seems to me that those golden years of elective opportunities have passed... at least for now... at least here in the "Golden State."
