Electronic Research VS Traditional Accuracy with a Personal Touch

Improving Internet Family History Research: A Combined Effort

Annamarie
This article is about my tenacious family research which has included face to face meetings with honorable local historians, inaccurate and costly database memberships, and the "allegedly free trials." I have been in the process of trying to stop using Internet searches for family research due to endless unproductive hits and information stated on searches. Initially in 1973, I had one small tattered cardboard box of family snapshots and storytelling writings left to me by my deceased Father. Next, I obtained information from historical societies which are the successful key to tracing my families back to the 1400's.

However, when the electronic whirlwind added family history search sites; I was swept up-immediately. But, I learned that "instant access on searches" was a time and money waster and left me with no facts; that I needed. The Internet can be an amazing search tool but may never be able to compete with historical societies; where real people help you sort through all the; "little known facts of home town stories." These verified historian's facts may include articles, deeds, plot maps, and family donated materials that are accurate, accessible, and time and cost effective. They led me directly to family homesteads.

I am so dismayed with the bittersweet impersonal loops of Internet searches; that led me on "wild goose" chases -right into the hands of call centers of advertisers. What's Next, you ask" First, is to salute truly free sites that provide accuracy at fair cost after you get your information -with no invasion of privacy. Hundreds of thousands of brilliant critical thinking human beings wait for us to call and visit historical societies.

I applaud Associated Content and Ultimate Theme creators and related sites for caring about "Internet searchers" projections. This Ultimate Call was the answer to, "What's Next?", at least for me. By this invitation; I am encouraged to hope that Internet searches, hits, and sites will improve next year because, "Humans are listening; now!" Thus my projections are as follows:

1). Accountability with disclaimers that state the truth about;"free trials and membership sites" charging for inaccurate information and inaccessibility..

2). Personable Internet searches: 24/7 instant help sites that have accessible numbers and workable emails of actual people; rather than undeliverable, undecipherable, and undesirable messages and loops of confusing cyber-babble.

3). Capability for electronic photo phone calls with actual family historians that charge only for accurate use-able data.

4). More restrictions on invasion of privacy, instant emails and ads that block your connections until you press their buttons and then are stuck with pop ups you can not get rid: or get them to stop instant messaging you ,unless you agree to purchase something.

5). Lastly, I would project that adding more accessibility and privacy for people with disabilities in all Internet searches that decrease uninvited and unrelated hits but rather should adhere to the American Disabilities Act and Consumer Protection Laws.

  • traditional historian hands on research, family history searches,
  • Changes needed for internet searches
Innovative family history searches are misleading, overwhelming, and need to add truth of "free trials and database accuracy."

This was very informative. I have tried to track down more of my Cherokee heritage but hit a brick wall quickly. I know more about the other side of my family though.
