Elephant Appreciation Day: A Bizzare Holiday Celebrated September 22

Who Knew Today was Elephant Appreciation Day? I Sure Didn't!

Elephant Appreciation Day is a bizarre holiday that an Elephant wouldn't ever forget, but that many people don't know exists. September 22 is Elephant Appreciation Day. Now's the time to make your plans to celebrate this bizarre holiday.

Bizarre holidays such as Elephant Appreciation Day make me wonder why we even have these types of holidays.

Come on. Do you really expect me to believe that someone, somewhere, outside a zoo is celebrating Elephant Appreciation Day? It sounds like a hoax to me. It's not, though. Elephant Appreciation Day is really a holiday.

According to Lockergnome.com, "September 22 was declared Elephant Appreciation Day in 1996 by Mission Media, a graphics and publishing firm who got the day included in "Chase's Calendar of Events." Why bother celebrating elephants? Mission Media says elephants deserve a day of their own because they are the largest land mammal of our era and are undeservedly threatened with extinction."

How can you celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day? Stay-at-home-moms (and dads) can have their children read an encyclopedia listing about elephants. They can also have their children draw photos of Elephants or find free Elephant coloring pages online.

You can also have children decorate cards and send them to the local zoo to be displayed in the elephant area. This is a great way to celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day.

Another great Elephant Appreciation Day activity would be to take a trip to a nearby zoo to take a look at the amazing elephants on their special - albeit bizarre - holiday.

Those in the workplace can celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day by casually mentioning this bizarre holiday to a co-worker. Meaningless trivia is usually the best way to spark an interesting conversation that will last you throughout the day.

Those who have a significant amount of cash can plan to take an African safari next year for Elephant Appreciation Day. If this holiday sounds fun to you, start saving and packing now so that next year on Elephant Appreciation Day you are out in the wild with all the - er - elephants.

The elephant is also the symbol of the Republican Party. Political gurus can celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day through showing pride for the Republican Party.

At happy hour, drink some fruity cocktails in honor of the elephants. Elephant Appreciation Day is a great excuse to head on out to your favorite hangout spot and enjoy beverages with your friends.

Not everyone will celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day. To be honest, I probably won't - not this year. However, Elephant Appreciation Day is a great day to celebrate with children and your friends.

People who care more about making this world a better place for all of its inhabitants, not just humans, will mark Elephant Appreciation Day by trying to help elephants. Nothing "bizarre" about it.

Since Meg lives in TN, she should be celebrating this day by donating to volunteering her time to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, TN.

Even though I grew up in western Pennsylvania, our family always celebrated Elephant Appreciation Day. The reason is . . . oh, I'm lying! However, some small businesses will use obscure holidays as a fun way to market and make themselves stand apart from the competition. Glad you posted.

Many of us will be celebrating Elephant Appreciation Day by trying to do some good for elephants, collectively or individually. One elephant who really needs our help is Queenie, and all it would take to help her is a few minutes of your time.
