Tip 1: Dust off the BBQ grill and picnic basket. Pull out the ribs, tofu or whatever you and your date like to eat from your refrigerator. Cook along the permitted BBQing areas, and lay your blanket out to relax. Don't forget the music.
Tip 2: The vendors are always on the job strolling back and forth with their ice cream carts. But you can bring your own shakes in a bowl or blender. Sit by the rocks, watch the lakefront waves and talk while enjoying a fruit shake.
Tip 3: Make working out more fun by bringing your bikes or wearing workout attire to take a walk or jog on the bike paths.
Tip 4: Watch the entertainment around the Buckingham Fountain stairs. There's usually a juggler, some breakers (also called breakdancers) or a magician around if you hang around long enough.
Tip 5: Starting May 29, the summer fireworks at Navy Pier begin. From May 29 to Sept. 4, there will be a free fireworks show every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10:15 p.m.
Tip 6: Bring your favorite board game, deck of cards, checkers or chess. There are game tables around the north side beach area (see photo) where you and your date can play a friendly match.
Tip 7: If you're a photographer or a ham in front of the camera, take advantage of the beautiful background. Snap some photos.
Tip 8: If you're an animal lover, take your dog(s) to the Montrose dog beach. Let your dogs join in the fun and get a little bit of exercise taking turns playing Fetch with it.
Tip 9: Play "Have you ever?" This game is one in which you ask your date all kinds of questions, and he has to say if he's ever done any of them. Getting to know your date by talking is mandatory.
Tip 10: Play basketball or volleyball. If you're both athletes, this'll give you two another way to connect. Good luck getting the loyal players off of the basketball court. Or, have a sandbuilding contest. You don't have to be good at it, just try. Even if your castle looks like it's about to be demolished, it'll be something to laugh about later.
Tip 11: Bring your laptop and a bunch of DVDs. Watch your favorite movies on the rocks or in the grass by the lakefront. Make sure your laptop is fully charged and be careful with your equipment.
