Firstly, it all depends upon the nature of your daily fitness schedule. Do you work out for more than 1 hour a day? Do you combine cardiovascular and weight training exercises? Are you burning more than 400 calories per day? Most importantly are you calorie counting and eating moderate portions of food? In such cases, it is fine to consume energy drinks or energy powders mixed in milk, fresh fruit juice or plain cold water.
Based on personal experience, I would recommend choosing any flavored energy powders from your local Vitamin Shoppe or health stores. If you work out for 2 hours a day running on the treadmill, biking, swimming and lifting weights, it is important to provide adequate fuel to your muscles. Without the use of energy drinks, it is common to wake up in the morning and feel stressed. Your body might ache in different areas like spine, arms, legs and joints. This can happen when you exercise without proper diet.
Regular consumption of bread, whole foods, fruits and lean meat or poultry might not be enough to give you the energy for your daily exercise. Moreover, you might feel lazy or heavy in the stomach to exercise after a meal or lunch. This is when the energy drinks, fruit shakes with energy powder and sports drink work well. You could make yourself some fresh fruit juice using berries, aged pears, apples and 2 scoops of your energy powder. This can provide instant energy for your work out.
It is recommended to consume such sports drinks and energy powder drinks at least 30 minutes before you begin your work out session. Hence, it can be consumed instead of a heavy lunch and you can always snack after your work out with healthy fruits like banana or healthy snacks like pasta with vegetables and a glass of fresh juice without any energy supplements.
When you use such energy powders like Spiru-Tein flavored energy powders or Source of Life/Energy shakes available in your health stores, you are less likely to feel exhausted. These also work well as meal replacements and provide proper endurance work out support. They also relieve you of the joint aches and body aches after waking up in the morning and leave you feeling fresh and ready for exercise every day.
It is also important to check for energy powders that are different for men and women. A whey protein works well for males while it might not be totally recommended for women. Soy or vegetable based protein energy drinks can be beneficial for women who exercise every day. These energy drinks and powders are available at any local health stores and can also be bought in bulk at wholesale stores like Costco. A good energy drink or powder can be bought for less than $30 and can be a healthy choice.
