Eliminate Noise in Your Home If You Want Your Children to Improve Academically

Mary Thatcher
You want your child to get good grades in school and study hard, and you think of everything to help him or her improve academic performance. You cook nutritious meals for the family, spend time with your children when it is time to do homework, and even set up a comfortable desk in the house for the child to study at. Yet nothing seems to be helping your child perform any better. Can it be that your home is too noisy for a child to concentrate on schoolwork?

If the television set is always on in your home, or the radio or stereo system on full blast, chances are that your child will have difficulty in concentrating on homework and required reading. Environmental Psychologist and noise expert Dr. Arline Bronzaft says that a noisy home is not conducive to a peaceful, quiet environment that enables a child to study and excel academically. Having known peers back in high school who did excel academically, one thing they would tell me periodically is that they did not listen to the radio when reading or doing homework. These friends not only got excellent grades but went on to get their PhD's. Since a noiseless environment is an absolute necessity for anyone to concentrate on schoolwork or any other project requiring work (as a writer I appreciate the value of silence), it is important to eliminate any noise that can disrupt the environment. In addition to television and the radio, noisy video games are another hindrance to a child's learning capacity. Of course, video games should not be played at all when a child is trying to complete a reading assignment for a history or science class. Having no noise going on is ideal for children, but may be a challenge if there are a lot of people in the house, too. Being quiet out of consideration for others is best, with no yelling, screaming, screeching or fighting taking place. Thus the absence of noise not only promotes better concentration on academics but also emotionally, for it eliminates nerves on edge and hyperactivity, too.

Encouraging your children to be all that they truly can be begins with a quiet environment that they can use for homework, reading, and quiet play (no video games) using educational toys. Neither children nor adults need to be exposed to chronic noise all day long as it can grate on the nerves and cause counter-productivity where concentration on a specific task is required.
