Elizabeth Edwards Told Before She Died that Daughter Cate Edwards was Engaged

Julia Bodeeb
Elizabeth Edwards had a bit of joy near the end of her life. Her daughter, Cate Edwards, became engaged to marry over Thanksgiving weekend. She was able to share this happy news with her mother.

Cate Edwards is a lawyer. Her fiancé, Trevor Upham, is a doctor in Washington, DC. Cate and Trevor met while students at Princeton University in New Jersey, reports the Daily Mail. By the way, this is the same college Michelle Obama attended. Let's hope Cate and her fiancé have as happy and strong a marriage as the Michelle and Barack Obama appear to have.

Cate Edwards has had a lot of pain in her life. She lost her brother Wade when she was age 14. And now Cate has lost her mother to breast cancer. Elizabeth Edwards was age 61 at the time of her death. Cate is only age 28. She has to handle the loss of her mother while also looking to the future and her wedding.

Elizabeth Edwards: A Strong Woman

Mrs. Edwards struggled with breast cancer for six years. She was still doing charity work and making public appearances for much of that time. She even opened a furniture store in North Carolina after her cancer diagnosis.

John Edwards Will Not Make a Eulogy at Funeral

Mrs. Edwards' funeral will be at the Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. John Edwards will not make a speech at his former wife's funeral. It is not known if this was his choice or if Elizabeth told relatives that she did not want him to make a speech at her funeral.

The Edwards were in the midst of a divorce at the time of her death. He will now raise their two youngest children, Jack, age 10, and Emma, age 12. These young children had their mother for such a short time.

Cate will be speaking at the funeral. The other speakers are several close friends of Mrs. Edwards. The Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas has announced that it will try to picket the funeral of Mrs. Edwards. It is likely however that the crowd to attend the funeral will be large and that the picketers will thus be unable to get close to the site of the service.

Mrs. Edwards' spirit will live on in her daughter. Mr. Upham, Cate's fiancée told Peoplehow much Cate and her mom were alike. "The have the same quirks, they like the same things. I think they even hold their phones the same way."

This would be nice news to hear any time, but especially when you don't have a whole lot of happiness to hang on to.
