Elizabeth Jones was One of the Founding Mothers of Fancy Farm, Kentucky

Not as much is known about the family of Elizabeth Jones as her husband, James Cash. But it is worth the effort to write what information we have about this founding mother of Fancy Farm and her family.

We know that Elizabeth Jones was born about 1804 in Tennessee. Her parents were Aaron Jones who may have come from Sevierville in east Tennessee and Sally Taylor who was born in Virginia or Kentucky which was part of Virginia until 1792.

In the 1820 census of Nelson County, Kentucky, James Cash is shown living alone in Bardstown next to the family of his older brother, John Cash. On the same page of the census form is the household of Aaron Jones. The only names given in the 1820 census are the heads of the households.

The Jones family had two males and three females under the age of 10. Three females were from 10 to 16 years of age. Aaron's age category is not readable, but the oldest female is listed as between 26 and 44 years old. Aaron is listed as a farmer. No slaves were listed.

The marriage between James Cash and Elizabeth Jones occurred on September 11, 1824 at St. Rose Catholic Church and was witnessed by Rev. Richard P. Miles. Elizabeth signed her name to the marriage bond with a partial "X", and is listed in succeeding census records as being unable to read or write. She was about 20.

Elizabeth and James Cash moved to Hickman County in 1834. They had at least seven children and more than 50 grandchildren. Death records from Hickman County show that "E. Cash" died a widow on August 2, 1878. She is listed as 76 years old.

Following the Aaron Jones family in later census records, they were still living in Nelson County in 1830. Twelve people are listed as living in the household with Aaron being between 40 and 50 years of age.

By the 1840 census, the Jones family was living in Hickman County, Kentucky with eight persons in the household, three of them engaged in agriculture.

Ballard County was formed from the northern section of Hickman County in 1842 and that is where the Jones family lived during the 1850 census (probably in today's Carlisle County which was formed from Ballard in 1886).

It the 1850 census, Aaron Jones gives his age as 72, meaning he was born about 1778. The birth place was North Carolina.

Sally (Taylor) Jones, is listed as "S. Jones" and was born in Virginia 63 years earlier, suggesting a birth year of 1787.

Aaron was living on a farm valued at $2000, a considerable property. The only others in the household was a male, "J. Jones" age 32 and a female "S. Jones" age 34. Both were born in Kentucky.

Elizabeth was not the only daughter of Aaron and Sally Jones to marry into a founding family of Fancy Farm. Two of her sisters married Hayden brothers.

Charity Jones, born about 1805, married Samuel S. Hayden (1803-1869) in 1828. He was son of Thomas Hayden and his first wife, Susan. Charity and Samuel Hayden had seven children.

Thomas Hayden and most of his 13 children, many of them married with children of their own, moved to the Fancy Farm area about 1834.

The death records from Hickman County show that Charity Hayden died on December 8, 1858 of the "flux" (dysentery). She was 54.

The half-brother of Samuel, James Hayden (1807-1877) married Jane Jones, the sister of Elizabeth and Charity. James Hayden was the son of Thomas Hayden and his second wife Margaret "Polly" (Willett) Hayden. Jane Jones and James Hayden were married on March 15,1834 in Washington County, Kentucky. They had at least seven children.

Returning to the family of Aaron Jones, some of his ancestors are known.

According to information provided by Betty Jo (Carrico) Popp, the parents of Aaron Jones were Isaac Jones (1734-1818), who was born in Chester, Pennsylvania and died in Sevierville, Tennessee. Elizabeth Cox (1745-1820), his mother, was born in Chester, Pennsylvania an died in Orange County, Indiana.

Her parents were Joseph Cox (1695-1786), who died in Delaware, and Hannah Huff (born 1710 in Pennsylvania). The parents of Joseph Cox were John Cox (born 9/24/1675 in Drayton, Berkshire, England and died in 1711 in Kennett, Chester County, Pennsylvania) and Rachel Embree Carr (born 1679 in New Castle, Delaware and died in 1735 in Chester Pennsylvania).

Nothing is currently known of Sally Taylor's ancestors.
