Elkhorn City Elementary School in Eastern Kentucky has declared the week of February 16-20, 2009 as "Kyle Week" in honor of Kyle Dean Smith, a ten year old student of that school who has Leukemia.

The school-wide festival will include the selling of orange T-shirts (orange being the color of Leukemia Awareness ribbons) which will say "Fighting for Kyle" in both children and adult sizes. Some of these T-shirts may include a picture of Smith. The students are not normally allowed to wear hats, but they will be allowed to wear hats during "Kyle Week" if they pay a dollar for the priveledge. Some students have said they intend to shave their heads during the week in Smith's honor, since he is now bald due to the aggressive chemotherapy treatments he is taking. There will be a beauty contest- and don't miss it! Councilman Mike Taylor is to be a contestant in the contest, dressed as a girl! Some key events during the week will be videoed and set to music. This video will be sent to Smith to watch in the hospital.

All proceeds from "Kyle Week" will go into the special account set up to help pay for the processing fees of the bone marrow tests being taken county-wide.
