Ellen DeGeneres American Idol Casting Shakes Idol Up Again

Robert Dougherty
Ellen DeGeneres and American Idol didn't seem like an obvious fit together, yet Ellen DeGeneres and American Idol have been merged together. Ellen DeGeneres was hired as American Idol's newest judge, in a surprising choice that came almost out of nowhere. American Idol hired Ellen DeGeneres just as she is beginning the latest season of her Emmy-winning talk show. But since Ryan Seacrest does about 10-20 other shows besides Idol a season, Ellen DeGeneres should be able to fit American Idol into her schedule in 2010.

The Ellen DeGeneres American Idol merger ends the saga of who will fill Paula Abdul's judge seat for the next season of the megahit talent show. During auditions for the new season, several guest judges have filled in alongside Simon, Randy and Kara already. Therefore, DeGeneres probably won't make her first appearance as American Idol judge until several weeks into the season.

Ellen DeGeneres is regarded as one of the nicer, pleasant hosts on the daytime talk show, so that may make her a fitting replacement for the ever-positive Abdul. Of course, when Abdul wasn't praising most every contestant, her often wacky behavior caused more drama than the singers themselves. DeGeneres is hardly expected to match those kind of antics, however.

Pairing Ellen DeGeneres with American Idol may seem a bit weird, especially since Ellen is better known for comedy and talk-show routines, not music. But DeGeneres incorporates music and dancing into pretty much all her shows, so that may have been an additional qualification, along with her name.

Since American Idol is the biggest thing on television, it hardly needs a ratings boost, although numbers have been a bit mixed lately. However, DeGeneres now matches Simon Cowell as the most well-known personality on the judges' panel, and their scenes together are sure to be highly anticipated.

This big-name casting still doesn't eliminate the fact that there will again be four judges on American Idol next season. A big complaint last year was that having four judges took up way too much screen time, which is why most hoped they would fire Kara DioGuardi. Instead, Abdul left, Kara stayed, and Ellen is coming onboard to bring a new twist to the usual Idol judge drama.

Another big question is how Ellen's comedic one-liners will fit in during the judging sessions. Will they be out of place, like when Dennis Miller joined Monday Night Football? Or will DeGeneres bring some needed sanity, intentional humor, and even warmth to American Idol?

Whatever the results, Ellen DeGeneres joining American Idol ensures that the singers may have a hard time overshadowing the judges once again, after she joins Season Nine in 2010. Until then, she will certainly have some things to say about it on Ellen in the months ahead.

i'm still trying to deal with this madness. first they add a 4th judge out of the blue, then they force Paula out, THEN they add another 4th judge out of the blue. what is this desperate need for 4 judges? if they can't live without 4 judges then they need those 4 to be Paula, Simon, Randy & Ellen! HELLO! THAT WOULD BE CRAZY COOL!

  • Bleh 9/11/2009

It doesnt matter whether shes a lesbian or not. Ellen has NO talent. Shes not funny and cant sing or dance. Why pick her is shes not able to judge singing. Paula needed to go because she seemed to be strung out on drugs so much during the show. Simon is dumb for chosing her. I wont be watching
