Ellen DeGeneres Debuts Comedic Wit on American Idol Hollywood Week

Hour-long Show Only Provides a Glimpse of Her Judging Season

The hour-long American Idol show that aired tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 9) hardly gave viewers a chance to hear and see how Ellen DeGeneres will be as a judge. DeGeneres debuted as the new and fourth judge on the popular reality tv show. Much has been anticipated with her joining the show and questions about what she will contribute as a judge.

It is apparent that DeGeneres will bring her comedic wit to the show as she joked with contestants about putting their shoes on because Hollywood was a "filthy town." She told Skii Bo Ski (aka Antonio Wheeler) that he shouldn't scare his audience in a humorous way, comparing him to a leopard stalking its prey. Otherwise, DeGeneres seemed intent on really listening and picking contestants that entertained her, wowed her, and made her a fan. She is also not afraid to be witty or play off of Simon Cowell's remarks. Cowell is still Cowell although in the hour-condensed show, one heard little from his usually acerbic tongue.

It does appear that those contestants who had a good day made it through to the next round in Hollywood. Obviously pegged as the ones to watch by the show's producers, Andrew Garcia delivered a riveting performance with a Carlos Santana inspired take on a Paula Abdul song. Crystal Bowersox already has a fan club with other contestants providing background vocals while she sang "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." Regardless whether he makes it all the way, hats off to Michael Lynche (aka Big Mike) for giving a good performance with the wonderful distraction of his wife being in labor!

What will be telling is to see how many of these contestants are able to continue these good days and ultimately become the next American Idol. Also, let's hope DeGeneres will continue her refreshing humorous charm.
