Elmo and Friends Come to PrimeTime

Elmo and His Friends Take on More Military Issues

Angela Howard
Sesame Street and Elmo are bringing some more important issues out in the open as they take on issues that arise when a military member comes home from deployment. For any military family the thought of deployment is real. First Sesame Street and Elmo taught about Talk, listen, and connect. This show taught children about what a deployment is and ways we as a military family could stay connected throughout the deployment. Now they take on some more issues, one being Post traumatic stress disorder. This is a real issue with many military members and their families. Deployments are real to many and the fact is that many military members are not coming back the same in which they left.

On April 1st 2009, PBS will run a primetime special. They want to spread the awareness of not just PTSD, but many issues that are real to so many, just as they did to spread the awareness of deployments a few years ago. Elmo along with Queen Latifah and John Mayer will do all they can to help bring these issues to life and help the children understand what is happening to their loved one or those around them. As a mother of 3 and growing up watching Sesame Street, I feel this is such a great way to get the word out to the many military families. As an Army wife with 3 deployments behind me and my family and more to come, I loved their Talk, Listen, and Connect show. Not only did my children learn about deployments, but it opened up a line of communication between all of us. As a wife of someone who has Post traumatic stress disorder, I will not miss this special. I really hope my children ranging from almost 2 to 8 can take something away from this show. There is so much about PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) that is still unknown, but for Sesame Street to take on this and so many other important issues to help the children and military families understand things, I feel is just wonderful.

Tune in to PBS on April 1, 2009 at 8 p.m. to join Queen Latifah, John Mayer, and your Sesame Street friends for "Coming Home: Military Families Cope With Change." Make sure to check your local listings to be sure you don't miss out on this awesome opportunity for learning
