Once considered a last resort or a defiant act, eloping has actually become acceptable as couples begin to choose eloping as opposed to a more traditional wedding.
Surprisingly, eloping doesn't always mean what it once did. While many still follow the tradition of an inexpensive, quick wedding - whether it be a tropical destination or simply a weekend trip to Las Vegas, eloping can now become a more elaborate affair, occasionally costing just slightly less than traditional weddings, as people choose to include close family and friends in the ceremony, as opposed to being alone or with one or two other people.
Even wedding consultants are beginning to cash in on the eloping trend - consultants are beginning to offer special packages for those eloping or those following the 'hybrid' way of thinking and planning to allow more people in their special day.
There is, however, one thing in common with all elopements - the ceremony is much more intimate and meaningful. Those who choose to elope often do so because the process is more about the couple and less about the preparation. As eloping takes very little preparation, many brides especially find it a low-cost, low-stress way to go. No more do they have to worry about whether or not Aunt Betty is allergic to shellfish, nor do they have to figure out where to sit Cousin Marcia and her sister Jane because the two are no longer speaking. They're able to get married in a ceremony tailor-made for the couple, as small and intimate as they want it to be.
Those who choose to elope unfortunately face a big downside. Returning from their elopement means announcing the news to their family and friends, many of which may not be happy by the decision made. If you're looking into eloping, you may consider having a sort of reception upon returning to announce and celebrate your news. This could, possibly, soften the anger the friends and family that weren't included in your ceremony may feel.
Whether you go the traditional route or choose to elope, marriage is ultimately about the bond between two people and should represent the love that they share. Having shed many of its negative positions, eloping has become one of the best and far more intimate ways to unite two people in a love that should last forever.
