Elton John's Most Outrageous Costumes of All Time

Ryan Drew

Elton John is known for many things. He was knighted by the Queen of England in 1998. He has sold over 250 million records worldwide. And occasionally he has a tantrum. But perhaps, what Elton John is best known for is his crazy costumes. Here is a list of Elton John's most outrageous outfits of all time.

Donald Duck

Elton John performed a free concert in Central Park in 1980. And as an encore, Elton John costumed up as famous Disney character Donald Duck. Elton sat at the piano, and literally quacked his way through a truly memorable performance of Your Song.

Tina Turner

Elton John and Rod Stewart have a funny relationship. The two share the same warped sense of humor. So it comes to no surprise that, during a Rod Stewart concert in the mid 80s, Elton surprised Rod by appearing on stage fashioned as Tina Turner. Rod and Elton had a great laugh to the delight of the crowd.

Statue Of Liberty

Elton John in the seventies was like Lady Gaga of 2011. Everybody was in love with him, and wanted to know what he was going to wear next. Although Elton never wore a meat dress, he did dress as The Statue Of Liberty at a 1976 concert. It was Independence Day at Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts, when Elton came on stage outfitted as the woman who symbolizes our freedom. With a torch in hand, Elton walked on stage to thousands of fans. The crowd cheered wildly at the showman. The crowd knew to expect some crazy outfits from the wild Brit, but this one took the cake.

Rhinestone Dodger

Elton John was at his peak when he took the stage at Dodger Stadium in October 1975. Unless you lived through the 70's, it's impossible to fathom truly how popular he truly was. For the second set of his concert, Elton John got decked out in full rhinestone royalty. Wearing a simple Dodgers outfit, Elton John bedecked the uniform from head to toe in rhinestones. He was the most flamboyant baseball player of all time. Except his home runs came as number one hits. This was the first time Dodger Stadium had hosted a concert since the Beatles caused a riot there in the 60s.

Pinball Wizard

In 1975, Ken Russell adapted the 1969 rock opera Tommy for a theatrical release. He asked Elton John to play the Pinball Wizard. Wearing monstrous platform boots and looking like a beastly Waldo from the Where's Waldo books, Elton John also covered the song Pinball Wizard. The song eventually became a top ten hit on both sides of the ocean. Although Elton John never appeared live on stage dressed as the Pinball Wizard, his seven minute cameo in Tommy is one of his wildest costumes of all time.

Mozart

Towards the end of the 1980's, Elton was getting tired of the ridiculous costumes. But for one of his most historic tours, a 13 city tour of Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, John suited up in one of his most famous get ups. Elton John came on stage as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Besides wearing a pearl white suit, John had a large powdered wig and even a mole place on his face. Though ridiculous in many settings, it actually worked for this concert. The sweeping strings of the backing symphony gave John's music a more classical feel. In 1988, John released a video of Candle In The Wind from this concert, which eventually made it to number six on the Billboard Top 40 Chart.

Peacock

The more things change, the more they stay the same. On an episode of the old Muppet Show, Elton John wore a large multi colored Peacock suit, as he sang Crocodile Rock. In 2011, Cee-Lo Green paid tribute to his idol Elton John by wearing a similar suit at a recent television awards ceremony. Cee-Lo attained much attention over his costume, but it was Elton who did it first.

At the age of 63, Elton John doesn't get extravagant at concerts anymore. His dress is now relegated to black suits and some colorful glasses. But occasionally, as with the 2011 Grammy Awards with Lady Gaga, a little bit of that 70s showmanship reappears. Elton John truly is a gifted performer.
