Elvis Night on American Idol Put The King Back on Stage

Tuesday was Elvis night on American Idol. Older themes seem to be the trend this season with songs from the Rolling Stones and Beatles in previous weeks. The producers continue to choose themes from artists that were popular long before this season's contestants were even born. This may be the reason why younger contestants, such as Aaron Kelly and Katie Stevens, are consistently told that they need to start sounding younger. It's kind of hard to do when they are performing songs from their parent's or perhaps even grandparent's generation. Tuesday's mentor was Season Eight's runner up, Adam Lambert. What the connection is between Elvis and Adam, who knows.

Crystal Bowersox kicked off the show and once again delivered the best performance of the night singing a soulful rendition of Saved and for the first time accompanied herself on an electric guitar complete with three gospel backup singers. All four judges said it was a fantastic performance. Tim Urban is also turning into one of the judges' favorite performers. His heartfelt performance of I Can't Help Falling in Love earned him rave reviews and Kara called it her favorite Tim performance ever.

Lee DeWyze delivered a solid performance of A Little Less Conversation. Aaron Kelly stepped out of his comfort zone and performed a jazzy rendition of the classic Blue Suede Shoes. Randy, Ellen and Kara liked it, but Simon said it sounded like a high school concert. Andrew Garcia made some melody changes to another Elvis classic, Hound Dog that did not impress the judges. The 50s style microphone that he carried around the stage only added to the awkward performance.

Sioban Magnus performed a version of Suspicious Minds that the judges found confusing since she the beginning of the song in a slow and soulful tone and then changed in the middle to her bold and screechy style. Michael Lynche, who was saved by the judges last week, made them proud with his beautiful performance of In the Ghetto.

Katie Stevens stepped up and performed Baby What Do You Want Me To Do? Randy liked her vocals, and Kara thought she did a great job, but Simon didn't like the song. Ellen had the best comment when she said, "I thought the song was horny." And, then went on to say, "Because there were a lot of horns in it." Casey James performed Cloudy, and judges like it but felt he was capable of doing more.

So, who is going home tonight? Remember, since the judges used the "save" last week on Michael Lynche, two contestants are going home tonight. Based on Tuesday's performances, Andrew Garcia and Sioban Magnus may be going home tomorrow unless their fans save them. Tune in tonight night at 9 p.m. EST on FOX for the live results show.
