Rob Halpin has withdrawn from the Chicago mayoral race, which some say could place Rahm Emaunuel's campaign in jeopardy. Halpin rents the home of former Obama Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood. Halpin decided to end his candidacy for Mayor of Chicago Monday, December 2, 2010. Had Halpin stayed in the race, he would have been running against his landlord, and has been living in the Ravenswood home since Emanuel moved to Washington, D.C.

Emanuel faces some challenges from the Chicago Board of Elections regarding his residency status. Halpin contends that he has no plans to endorse any mayoral candidates, however, he is not closing the door on the possibility of running for office in the future. Halpin states "Should circumstances ever dictate the need for new leadership, would remain open to the idea of running in the future when I can more fully put together a campaign capable of bringing real, ethical, responsive leadership and vision to the city."
